M5 competition model - huge rear black diffuser

Looks like allocations for the ‘19 competitions are coming out, but I wonder if others are having the same hesitation in ordering a light color for the competition model due to the large black gloss rear diffuser. I usually like the contrast on the diffusers, but the size and shape of this piece seems way too large and awkward. I feel like black or darker greys work, but anything lighter will pop in a bad way. Just putting it out there, but am I alone in this?

yea it's pretty terrible :/ tried to get them to get it to me in body paint but noone seems to wanna do that

Even with the blacks, it's not the same black. And obviously not a dark grey. I'm gonna probably just wrap it to match whatever I pick.

Not a huge fan but will wait to see in person and go from there; I spec'd SG so may or may not work. I ordered CF roof so may try to wrap in a similar weave or weigh the aftermarket options once they start to trickle in.

1st world ///M problems.

It’s HORRIBLE, a terrible marketing decision to go this direction with that and blacked out mirror caps, same with the black spoiler while we’re at it. The rear now looks like an M550! They keep track of what everyone does which is remove the chrome then they take it 2 steps too far and then force it down our throats, really annoying. All we want was black grills, fender air vents, and the rear badges (and even that is questionable on darker colors).

I'm sure if you did a deep dive into BMW Individual they could help you out but good lord, why should we have to do that when the standard car comes with the same parts painted the right colors?

In a lot of pics I hate it but in the video of the white car I think it actually looks pretty sweet... I have a feeling its one of those things that is going to look much better IRL vs pics.

For me, it's about the driving experience, so the color of the rear diffuser is a non-issue.

Mixed reviews I guess. Still, think Black or grey are the only ones that work with this issue.

And yes, definitely first world problems.

This single-handedly changed my decision. I deliberately passed up the ‘18 knowing the ‘19 Comp was around the corner. Told the dealer I’m passing and decided on the regular ‘19 M5 instead after seeing that bumper.

It's Individual Piano Black.

That little detail changed your decision? Seems a bit extreme tbh. That section is in 3 pieces and easily removable. For sure someone would happily trade or you could simply contact this company for color match wrap to sample.

That is ridiculous. Just have it painted. Problem solved.

Yeaaaaaaaa as others have said.... this is a super simple fix if you really want the comp package. I'd just go for it :P

Oh right, sure, sorry, what I meant was it isn't the same as the black exterior colors available by default; BSM/ABM

Even if I were to get the piano black interior trim, I don't think that'd convince me to make it worth keeping the rear apron as such

Bummer. It’s important to have gotten the bumper right as it’s what 95% of folks on the road will be seeing of the car.

If I’m leasing the vehicle through my business, why would I do that? To me, it sounds crazy spending 8k more to buy a car with bits painted a certain way only to paint them back to the standard way. What else do I gain? Some seatbelts, a badge, VERY marginal hp bump from a neutered tune, and upgraded “motor mounts”? I just don’t see it on this one. Where exactly is the value coming from?

By all means, enjoy the black bumper.

The upgrade looks cheap to me. It’s not worth trading out of an almost new F90 base M5 for but most buyers in the market today will jump on the Competition.

Wrap it? Repaint it the original color before returning it at end of lease?

Just trying to help with options!

Lol nah...

I found it interested that on the BMW configurator, it's a zero dollar option to swap down from the CP wheels to the standard wheels when you have the CP M5... This tells me they're worth no more to them and shouldn't be to you either.

If you plan on lowering, adding a tune, or swapping exhausts, this becomes a complete waste as well.

With the f80 m3, people didn't like the 666 style wheels on the comp package, and Bmw caved to pressure to allow people to swap to the original wheel options for a no cost option and allowed you to configure your car as such on the online configurator.

I ordered mine with MBB. I'm looking forward to the black diffuser. I think it will look more aggressive, but we'll see. I don't think 90% of people will even notice and those who do will know it means the car is something different.

I keep on looking at the diffuser and am starting to think we may get used to it. Was thinking black but now I’m veering towards white which is completely opposite of what I was originally thinking. Hoping it looks better in person.
