I think I'm going to remove them. I don't see how it could hurt. The K&N decision I'm a little more skeptical about given the mixed results on back to back dyno runs I've found out there. Seems like for some cars it helps a little, others hurts a little, some no change. I'd love to see back to back dyno runs on the f90.

Hp gains are minimal on any intake / charcoal delete + drop-in scenario.

Bad deal is K&N and Green do not have anything in the pipeline for the M5 right now.

I just left a meet where the owner of MSR brought his M5.... Wow! That thing is a beast, sounds amazing with his intake/exhaust setup. I had an msr intake in my last one..... Can't wait to get one for the F90.

One thing I noticed after doing this, is you can smell the exhaust of cars in front of you if they floor it for instance.

Does our climate system have a charcoal filter for odour removal ?

The charcoal intake filters have nothing to do with the cabin air filters.

Great job with this quick tutorial; took no more than 20 minutes from start to finish (and that was with struggling to get my stubby hands under the air box cover..)

Thx AGS. Did this last night. Pulled the charcoal filters and also dropped in the BMC's. Feel so accomplished turning the wrenches myself.

Just wanted to thank you for such an awesome write-up! Removed my charcoal filters and swapped in BMC air filters tonight. Super easy with your guide!

Agreed on the thanks OP! Super easy diy pulled the charcoal filters and added BMC. May sound slightly better but no real noticeable gains. Either way good to know those cheap charcoal filters are out of the way!

A definite improvement in turbo sound and BOV sound!

Also wanted to note that the rear bolts on the braces are 18mm and fronts are 16mm so no one has to spend time checking

Step 1 (Red) - Remove these plastic covers. They pop off with a light pull strait upwards.

Step 2 (Orange) - With two flat blade screw drivers on either side of the center pin, gently lift the pin up then remove the plastic pop rivets.

Step 3 (Yellow) - Loosen the two hose clamps on either side of the air hose and remove air hose.

Step 4 (Green) - Remove the two bolts for the metal brace.

Step 5 (Blue) - Loosen the 6 bolts that secure the air box cover. BMW finally got smart and designed these bolts so they don't come out all the way, they have a retainer on the inside to keep them attached to the air box lid so you can't drop them down into the engine bay.

Step 6 (Purple) - Drivers side only, loosen the bolt that holds the rubber shield in place.

Step 7 - Lift air box cover and use a flat blade screw driver to pop the charcoal filters out of the air box cover.

Step 8 - Reinstall the air box cover making sure it's on straight and makes a tight seal all the way around. Reverse steps 7 through 1 to reinstall everything.
Just did this. Thanks for the write up. Just to make it even easier for the next person......The blue and purple screws require a T-25 and the green circle bolts require 18mm and 16mm sockets.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the gray felt on the OE filters is for?

Thank you for the write up on this. I've been wanting to change the filters and been wondering if it would increase turbo and BOV sounds. Looks like it does from (thanks devondragon). Just curious is there a difference between BMC filters and K&N? I've always used K&N.

Man. I have to say this was alot more work than I thought. While I really appreciate the torx bolt revision, you have to really muscle out that stupid air box.

I can actually hear the turbos winding up now, so well worth the sweat.

Any sound clips from these guys? I'm sure the stock air box flows really well with the filter change. I want some performance but ready looking for sound. Weighing the options of intakes vs just doing this which will probably flow better then open filters in the hot bay. Thoughts?
