The C8 Corvette is not that expensive. Don't know why you put it in the higher price category. The price fits perfectly in the 1st group of cars, no? I would seriously consider the new Corvette, it's a mid-engined NA V8 after all. I would also consider a Cayman GT4, but those things (along with the Corvette) just don't have enough trunk space for it to be the only car in your garage.

Other than that, I would consider getting the G82 M4C (or even the M3). Yes, the front end is questionable at best, but the overall car will be great to drive. I would even consider getting a G82 M4 CS as a replacement for the M5.

The SVR is hands down the best sounding car of the bunch. The JLR supercharged V8 sounds sublime (first-hand experience). The Range is a real nice truck to drive. I would not consider the M550i. Oh, and the M5 isn't a bad choice either. It's a rocket ship with almost too much power for the public road.

You have obviously never driven a nice wagon. I have had everything from a high school girl's track team telling me how much they loved mine from the windows of their bus, to mid 20 somethings coming up to talk to me about it at gas stations and grocery stores, all the way to 50 yo cougars telling me how awesome it was at the airport or restaurant valet.

Unlike an M3/4/5 (I have owned multiple variants of M3/5's plus an M4) wagons are not sausage magnets.

Normally yes, but with a 2-year waiting list, if you want one now, used examples are incredibly marked up, as well as cars that were backed out of deals. Its pay to play pretty much. Even a man who won a C8 from the lottery, the dealer doesn't have a car for him unless he's willing to pay markup!

C8 corvette would be great all around, tech performance and attention grabber.

M5 is great all around car period but not seeing it being a choice for you.

I would investigate Porsche 911, had two of them and just a rock solid car.

Almost went back to the 911 again but so happy i chose the M5, Its a wolf in Wolfs clothing.

any car person recognizes it immediately and what its "M5" logo stands for.

LOL. I don't lose, especially to a self described "freelance automotive journalist" with an overly confident sense of self. You couldn't afford me anyhow.
I love how everybody thinks they should be able to describe how someone else's financial picture should be evaluated like what lawyers they can afford.

Classic
This one made me laugh

I miss Roadfly. I was really active on the E46 M3 page there.

Cayman GTS, unless you need backseats. In that case, I would still get the Cayman, and figure out how to live without backseats
