It looks like the top buttons on the gear selector are for driving mode selection- comfort/sport/sport+. I don't see the options on the left side of the shifter- We can see the steering wheel adjustment (heat?) and auto start/stop- as in the 8 series.
The gear selector still has the D/S written- so it would be the last slot- as it is currently. Unless its adjustable ride height. The diagrams in between the up/down switches seem to be big blob, medium blob and small blob. Last edited by palpatine_us; 06-29-2017 at 06:59 PM.. |

The buttons to the left are for Driving Dynamics. Auto Start Stop is on the dash. The Steering "adjustment" is for resistance not heating. Its no more awkward than if it was on top. It's still a thumb button and only needs to be used if the driver is exiting the vehicle under certain conditions and intends to use additional operating functions. |

When parking the X5M you don't have to put it in park...you just turn it off like you would if it had an auto. You just keep it in gear. I'm guessing the new M5 will work the same way.

Data Logging (Performance Data) for parameters to be published and/or certified. It's wearing winter tires bearing certification markings and has very few options installed. Those that are fitted would not increase weight.

A park button has been added to satisfy updated regulatory requirements regarding gear selector design and allow for optional Remote Parking.

There were compelling reasons not to include one. The number of roll-away incidents occurring on BMW vehicles with a dedicated Park Position button are significantly higher than on M vehicles without one. The inclusion of one now is born out of need to provide the necessary driver inputs to satisfy the conditions to utilize the Remote Parking option without triggering the warning horn.

Like and not like
Maybe I will change my mind later but while I welcome the change from the basic stub of the past, I feel the new design of the gear selector/drive logic buttons is a bit OTT.
Also; it would be nice if we could specify a normal starter button instead of the the red article. Let's see when car arrives. |

But wait a second meow ... no DCT? no 6MT? So ... why are we here again?
The all new M5 seems to be an every-man GT cruiser at this point. Oh well, another victory for bean counters and shareholders. |

Shift lever reminds me of the PDK lever in the new Panamera
