M5 F90 not starting
Im new to this forum so apologies if I make my self look like a fool. So I have a BMW M5 F90 2018. Whilst driving engine cut off at like 30mph. Does not start, it just does a click. Plugged in scanner and getting codes:
21a511 213007 213008 213009 030e08 I have checked these codes and they are linked to battery isolating switch/starter battery. I previously changed coolant tank (leaking), coil packs 5 to 8 and all 8 spark plugs. Drove for 50 miles and then the engine cuts off. Anyone else experienced anything like this? Battery was disconnected when work was carried out and then reconnected. Any ides? Last edited by Jay43; 08-21-2023 at 05:37 PM.. |

If it's the isolation switch it could mean your battery got too discharged while you were working on it and didn't charge enough. Probably the first thing is to hook up a lithium ion charger. You need to do something special to close the isolation switch to allow it to charge. The bmw (ctek) one has instructions on how.
Forgot to add that the isolation switch is there so the battery doesn't discharge too much and damage the Lion battery. |

It could be something else too. But that seems most likely. Unlike "normal" cars in typical German fashion of being too clever for their own good BMW only charges the battery when coasting. It's supposed to charge more when the engine won't be able to restart but depending on your drive cycle maybe it didn't.

It could be the alternator is bad. I had a car die on me once while riding along in stop and go traffic. I thought for sure the engine seized. But I got a jump and a bit of a charge and was able to make it home. Turns out it was a bad alternator. Hopefully it's just that or battery (although the battery in this car isn't cheap).

Jump won't work if the isolation switch opened. It has to be closed first.
The manual says you need to charge before jumping in this case. |

Battery was removed when changing the coil packs and spark plugs. After 2 days (50miles) the engine cut off whilst driving. So i don't know if that was related. In the past month or so the prior to work being done, it has hardly been driven so i don't have a clue. But the codes reading it could be the battery isolating switch open/faulty/warning before opening. pmsteinm said charge it as they won't start even with a jump start which i had no idea about 😆

I have not read about rod bearing issues on these cars. I would change them at some point if I start reading a lot of reports of failures.
Changed rod bearings myself on my 2008 M3 and 2008 535xi, but the engines in those cars are known to have rod bearing issues, though whatever problem there is does not affect every car. I did them as preventative maintenance. The N54 bearings at 150k looked better than the S65 bearings at 60k. |

Spoke to garage, they go engine seized due to con rod failure. BMW M5 F90 2018 with 45k miles. He said he will strip down engine next week and get a proper look at it with pictures but for now he had a look at the oil pan and found metal pieces which he said is the con rod. 😂

I believe this is NOT a coolant tank leak which seized the engine but will know more next week. |
