The OEM sensor is held in with O-rings, it is not secured in any way beyond that. In theory it should just slide out, but it does not simply pull out. Whats required is to put a vertical slit on the front of the sensor port, then break away the slit by using a needle nose. Once the sensor is exposed, it pulls right out.

This procedure anyone with basic hand tools installing in their garage, would be able to do. I know most would rather not tamper with wiring themselves if they do not have to.

I've also sent out several emails to try and source the sensor, but it seems to be a BMW only part and nobody else uses that sensor in any of their vehicle. If someone is able to find it, i'd be more than happy to include it with the reservoir. As of right now the only way for me to do that is to start scrapping brand new reservoirs for a sensor; that's just not a realistic option for a variety of reasons.

Thanks

Thanks for providing a solution. I am also considering this though I have not had any issues. I will be holding on to the F90 for many years, hopefully, so this may be in my future. Some buyers may pay extra to get a tank with the sensor already installed.

Awesome. You didn’t have to butcher the OEM coolant reservoir like I did to remove the sensor, so you could slice it open and harvest the silicate bag and install in the new reservoir.

Do you see a significance of the silicate bag?

A good amount of information (there’s a 2005 Motor article on the different types of antifreezes - if I can dig it up), but the VW/Audi group, and Mercedes have used these for a long time.

The logic is that the modern glycol based coolants were designed with reduced amounts of silicates, but this had the effect of aluminum corrosion within the cooling system. So the silica bag allows for consistent infusion of silicates - well to the point of protecting aluminum internals even at the 100K mile coolant exchange intervals on many cars.

My tank has just arrived and it looks fantastic. Will get it installed soon.

Regarding the O-rings - does have anyone have a part number as mine was shipped without them?

The o-rings are already installed internally. You’re good to go.

Well... now... homanmaster that means you put double o rings on yours and it might leak as a result if the billet one comes with o rings installed already...

VERY NICELY DONE.

Need matching one for the other tank, for symmetry.

Raza stated he did not put o ring in the tank. So if you put the sensor in without the prongs, then your tank will definitely leak. Haha I’ve had mine on my car with over 500 miles now and no leaks or issues. Been pretty solid after some spirited runs!

I met Raza in person when I went to pick up the unit, and he told me these are integrated and to discard original O-rings. No leaks here whatsoever.

I've now had to fill both my main and reserve coolant tanks with coolant twice and I'm at 21,000 miles. Dealer said they didn't find any cracks/leaks after the first time. Second time was just this week, so haven't been in for service yet.

Sounds like I need to seriously consider one of these billet tanks!

So…. Mine is leaking.. sure this is 100% user error. The coolant, it pools up in the indentation where the sensor connects I’m thinking it’s because I used O rings cause on the website it said mine didn’t come with them. So just to clarify .. are you guys installing the sensor with or without o rings. Cause I’m thinking the o ring I pre installed is too small and not seated right at this point. When I installed the sensor without o rings the leak was way larger.

Thank you in advance

Did you get this resolved?

Just to clarify for everyone, the o-rings for the sensor NEED TO BE REUSED FROM THE ORIGINAL HOUSING. The sensor and the two o-rings are the only items reused.

Thanks

I asked you this specific question in person, when I came to pick up my reservoir, about the O-rings, and you said I didn’t need to do anything else as these were already incorporated internally!!!

I’ve had zero leaks, not having reused the O-rings, and can only think that the tight fit of sensor connector is containing the coolant.

Back to sourcing these O-rings I guess…
