It's actually harder than it looks. I attempted, but had a tech at my dealer do it instead. You have to take off the mirror first, then inside the housing are 2 clips that you have to push out for the housing to come off. You then have to disconnect the electrical wire harness attached to the cap (for the turning light signal). You then reverse these instructions to put on new cover. I

I didn't take a video of it, but took some pictures. I'm pretty handy, but the mirror removal scared me. I didn't want to break it which is why I had the tech do it. It's probably a 20 minute job if you get someone that knows what they're doing. Best of luck! What are you going with?

JRod, thanks for the reply,
Was thinking about some carbon caps, and just wanted an insight before I got stuck in. Will probably do this myself, as I enjoy the challenge, will post some photos of the cracked glass afterwards , thanks again, Simon

Have thought about carbon, yes. Thought I would ask about fitting first, it’s just as I thought really, with removing the glass first it seems

My bodyshop guy just popped off the black ones and popped on the BMW performance carbon ones. No need to remove mirrors on my 2020 M5C

Yeah tried this too when I had my M550 still (and had M5 at same time). I was going to change the mirror caps on my M5 but didn't what that to be the guinea pig so I tried just taking off the M550 ones....I cracked both caps. As a result, didn't even attempt on F90. Was harder than it seemed.

Yes, I completely understand. This is one of the reasons I would never attempt it myself. However, I was standing there when he did both caps and I had the same concerns that you did in terms of cracking the caps. Since it is the black caps that were removed, those would be the ones most likely to be cracked and I did not plan on using those again. I had a specific discussion with the body shop guy regarding the need to remove the mirror glass etc. Neither of the OEM black M5C mirror caps were cracked or the new carbon fiber BMW performance mirror caps. The new mayor caps popped right on. Again, I would not attempt this myself. I deal with his body shop guy all the time and he is a friend. I paid him $40 and the dealer would charge me at least $250.

Saw a video on a G30. Guy just tilted the mirror and used a long flat blade to pop the tabs and it came right off for him. I’m gonna give that a try. If not the mirror just pops off like most bmws. Just a bit of pressure on the compression ring. It’s actually much simpler than the X5 arena. That has like 8 tiny screws and snaps that love to break under any pressure.

Ok super easy. Just tilt the mirrors all the way down and stick you fingers behind the mirror and apply pressure until it pops free. It won't break. It's just a slip ring around a plastic circle. Let the mirror dangle down and you can see the two tabs easily. Just take a large flat blade, stick it in between the upper and lower prongs and rotate to open both prongs at the same time. At the same time apply pressure backward to gently unseat the one tab. Repeat for second tab until the cover comes free.

Disconnect the turn signal plug, and use T10 to unscrew the 2 screws. I slid the signal slightly toward the plug part and Separated the other end from the guide. Then applied pressure from the outside of the mirror on the turn signal itself to separate it from the two tabs inside and then just pulled it out. Easy peasy.

I remember trying to remove the stock mirror glass for my wife's GTI back in 2012. Terrible blind spots and I was installing the European ones that allow you to see further out in the traffic lanes. When I went to pull the passenger side mirror off as you explained above, the outward pressure right before it released from the mounting point cracked the stock mirror glass. Since I was replacing the stock mirror glass it was no big issue.

So you cracked them on the GTI or the M5? Either way that's how they're removed so maybe be a bit more careful on the M5 using even pressure??? Idk what exactly you're looking for.

It was the wife's GTI. I appreciate your input and I am not looking for anything. Just sharing my experience removing a mirror.

Gotcha. Ya never felt like I was gonna break them to be honest but anything's possible. I just wish they made the euro style for the M5. I really like them on the X and my old AMG.
