Winter tires

For those of you that need to - when do you switch to winters? Is there a temperature range you use?

Thanksgiving is when I usually put winters on and keep them on until early April.

Depends on where you live and what you drive for. I am an essential worker... Staying home on snow days is not an option. I have snow tires mounted on another set of wheels sitting in my garage ready to slap on anytime I need. Doesn't take more than an hour or two. I live in Eastern Oregon and usually travel over the mountains for Thanksgiving, so the most common time that I put mine on is around the second week of November. If you don't plan on leaving Seattle, then I wouldn't worry about it until around the first week of December. If you have to take it in to a shop to change them, maybe sooner, to make sure you don't get caught in the rush when the first snow falls. I guess it depends on how dependent you are on this car and how important it is that you be able to drive it no matter the weather.

They say you should switch to winters when the temps drop below 7 degrees C but honestly if it doesn't snow u should be fine without switching to winters. If ur expecting snow and u think ur gonna have to drive when it snows out where u live definitely put on winters when the temps drop under the threshold.

Thanks for the tips. Appreciate it. I do have a separate wheel and tire set for winter so it's easier. Living at relatively high altitude too so am taking no chances. The snow in Seattle throws traffic into chaos and makes drivers unpredictable here.

I will say on winter tires, my last f90 was more than good in snow. I had the Pirelli sottozero's and they were great. The car was planted and stopping was not an issue.

I live in Nebraska and always remember by the "candy holidays" - winter tires on from Halloween to Easter. Makes it easy for me to remember.

True, but if it's wet and under 7 degrees C, your winter tires (not the hardcore Nordic type like hakkapeliitta R3) will be better than your summers too.

Yea I bought this car in the winter and I remember in one of the first few drives into ownership it was raining (temps around 10 C) I was doing a left turn and the car's rear broke loose on me with like 15% throttle DSC On 4WD normal (I was taking it very conservative as it was brand new etc.). Was a very surprising experience to say the least and I would not push this car very hard in the rain even though its awd, it just has too much HP.

I live in north cal and have been on sottozero for a whole year now.

IMO these are just better than pzero --- better MPG, same level of tire noise and most importantly they are run-flat.

Ya but what about seasons Mike!? The change of seasons - the spice of life.
Think about how boring it would be to be to live in a predicable warm climate all year - no ice, no snow drifts, no leaves clogging up everything, no freezing rain, no.... ah, shit, who am I kidding! Damn winter.

I just installed a set of Michelin Alpin PA4's on my 2020 M5C. It is about a month early but I needed an oil change and figured it was easier to get everything done in one visit. Got up to 125mph briefly - ride quality was nearly indistinguishable from the PS4s and no real road noise to speak of. Will take pictures and give further feedback after riding for a week or so. Actually can't wait for the first snow...

You change to winter tires when the temperature drops below 40F. That's when the summer tire compounds get harden and won't have good traction.

Michelin Alpin PA4 is the best rated performance tire on tirerack. 4WD with those tires, you can go anywhere including Alaska . I have them on my M6 for winter months and I live in MN.

I do the switching of tires before Thanksgiving. I just got a new set of winter tires from 4wheelonline since the set that I am using is starting to wear out upon checking my garage. I really like Michelin Xi3, I have been using this tire for years now and they never disappoint me.

I purchased my car in Jan of 2020 and got stuck in PA with summer tires. Went that same weekend, picked up a set of snows and rims, mounted them, and didn't see an inch of snow the rest of the year lol
