Carmax 2020 M5 Competition? Under 1k miles?

Gentlemen, Posted in the pricing forum, but hoping to get an answer quicker in case I need to move on this.

What am I missing here?

2020 M5 completion with 800 miles for $92,999?

https://www.carmax.com/car/18974187

Isn’t the sticker on even a base M5 competition $112,000 or so? This is a new car.

My concern is it’s at Carmax. Why isn’t it at a BMW dealership? The person bought it, drove it <1,000 miles and took like $25,000 bath on it? Makes no sense.

It was a “personal” use vehicle...not a lease or demo, I don’t think.

With 800 miles, seems almost no risk. Car max also has several guarantees.

Ask Carmax if it was used at the BMW Performance Driving School.

I talked to the sales manager there and he said they don’t have any more info other than what is on the Autocheck thing. It was purchased in Virginia, serviced in Tennessee, and ended up in New Mexico.

Sounds too good to be true, so it probably is and they can’t give me more detail on history.

You do agree it’s priced low?

Are you sure it is a competition? It doesn't have the badge or black exhaust tips.

The history report says it is, but I wondered why no badge. I didn’t know about black exhaust.

Seems too cheap and don’t like that Carmax has it. Has to be a reason.

Is this car in New Mexico now? Holy crap! This was originally at a CarMax outside of DC. I had it sent down to Virginia Beach for free and immediately passed. It was $98k back then though. And to be honest a $20k hit sounds about right for a used "new" car. I passed because it didn't have the BO sound system and had a big scrape on the hood by the emblem that they wouldn't give me a straight answer on fixing it before I signed anything.

Plus the attitude I got from them when wanting to spend more than 30 minutes with the car to know if I wanted to buy it or an E63. I ore filled out all the forms online to simply test drive it and I still had to wait nearly 2 hours to just get in the car. First they couldn't find it despite it being sent here specifically for me. Then wanted me to redo all the paperwork.

I would avoid it (and carmax) like the plague.

Not surprising at all. My friend just bought a brand new base M5 (the carmax M5 is a base also) with $112k sticker for $97k, so 92k is not far off for a used. The seller took a bath on it but that's not unusual when you change your mind so fast.

Wow, thanks for this hugely helpful info. Not sure why it was sent the NM other than it wasn't moving on the East Coast (probably for good reason).

Seems they have some reason to not let you really look at it. If it's scratched already, it's likely been abused.

Does the term "base M5" just mean not competition, or does it mean no other packages like executive?

I eventually did drive it which is what sold me on buying the base M5 over competition. Just loved the suspension. Was more looking to lease and I wanted the BO and darker aluminum trim vice the light color one. And that scratch just angered me. That plus the way she treated me when I told her I wasn't spending $100k on a car that I get to spend 20 min with in this condition.

When I was in the market for my X5 50i they had essentially the exact one I ended up buying but it was treated like shit. Scratches all over outside and inside and they just wouldn't do anything about it but still wanted an enormous amount of money for the condition. CarMax doesn't know how to sell expensive cars. They just need to stick to the Toyota as and Honda's of the world.

Damage was reported to CarFax as well. Doesn't say accident, but damage was reported. Non-Competition, but well equipped (Exec, Driver's Pro). Black kidney grilles were added to build as well. Break-in service was done at 800 miles.

If you're looking for a non-competition, this is a much better deal:

They were using regular M5s as recently as February 2020, granted I haven't been there since

It looks to be a base M5. They probably are discounting it b/c of the sunroof and ugly front license plate bracket!

I've personally inspected this car. This M5 is a base and it was damaged. I pulled the carfax and it indicates damage.
