Purchasing a 2018 F90 M5 - What do I need to know?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of upgrading my current M2 to an M5. It will be used and likely be a pre LCI model, 18/68 plate in the UK.

I was wondering if there are any common faults, snags or traits that I need to look out for when considering a certain car?

Price range is going to be around the £60k mark, which means mileage from 7k up to about 25k. At 25k miles are we seeing any issues or are they still good value?

I should still have at least 1 years manufacturer warranty left, but I can get this extended on a dealer bought car to 2 additional (3 total) for around £1,000, which I think is worth it for peace of mind alone.

I'd love to hear any thoughts or input on this?

Cheers

As long as they have had the all important running in service and have been properly maintained you should be fine.

If you want the full blown sound effects make sure to get a pre particulate filter car with the Mperformance exhaust.

If you don't want to spend £10k changing pads and discs, make sure your DO NOT get a car with ceramics.

Thanks, Andy, appreciate the heads up. How do you know if it's a pre particulate filter car, is this a certain model year? Cheers

I cant remember 100% for sure, but I think it is anything built after November 2018 that has one.

Find out the date of when the grinch came along with the OPF. A pre OPF model is a sonorous delight and will fully show that epic v8
One month old M5 comp LCI is £83k with only 100 miles on the clock, staggering cliff edge depreciation

Good luck 👍

Ps I might be doing same after that horrific m3 frontal

The one I'm looking at was spec'd to £94,000!! It's now at £55,000. I'm hoping that the bulk of the drop is done, but to be honest, I'm not too worried as the car is amazing.

Will get a build date from the dealer tomorrow and see what the crack is. Give it 6 months and these will be sub £50k. Not sure there are better cars for the money?

I agree
V8 600+ BHP
Value for money it's an excellent car if purchase used. I think new ones will be sold with £20k off soon. In the UK, the market for these cars is diminishing so they'll be keen to shift them. Politicians used come at motorists with just taxes but more lately they've started to interfere with even the noise it makes!!! Baffling nanny state

I'm keeping an eye out for one, might pounce on a 6-12 mth old LCI model so that's going to be around March/April time

I know a dealer with a brands hatch grey M5 comp LCI ready to go unreg new, If you fancy haggling a juicy discount with them!

Nothing wrong with getting CCB if you're in the 7-25km range. CCB should last more than 100k km easy.

Car was registered in June 2018... does this mean we are all good and a little extra noise?

Make sure the engine was not modified via software or that remaining warrantee will be worth nothing. BUY EXTENDED WARRANTEE.

Check to see if all the updates were done, gas tank, etc.

Take motrin before you drive it, or your face will hurt from smiling too much.

Make sure you check the wear on those brake discs before you flesh out, as they are (at least for CCB’s, horrendously) expensive.

Personally I would only buy from a main dealer, as they have probably sold the car originally and traded it back in again though these car do come up in auctions so ask the questions about history.

Oh and yes to extended warranty, money well spent in my book.

Thanks all. Picking her up on Thursday and seems to tick all the boxes. Definitely will take an extended warranty when the time comes (still 12 months left).

Share pictures when you have a moment. Actually considering one too on a 18 or 19. I actually like the dash more but am used to the updated digital one. Choice between this and the G80 next year but want to see in person before final decision.

I'm about 22K miles into my M5C, still love it and drive "enthusiastically" almost everyday A suggestion I would say is at the miles you're looking at, likely the car's tires would have been replaced. I'm not a fan of the Pirellis the car comes with and would suggest you look for one with Michelins. Only issue I had was the car turning off after a cold start in the morning once or twice a week (has been written and commented on the forum many times). It has to do with the fuel pump under the rear seat. I had it replaced (under warranty) early on my ownership and never had an issue since.

Just so your due diligence in research, car fax, requesting service history, etc. You are really not buying a old car of concern here. The stock brakes will squeak, unless you change the pads. Typical service issues are passenger restraint failure, due to moisture buildup throwing off sensor.

Will do! I'm coming from an M2 to this, so should be a reasonable step up. They have just started to fall into affordability for me and seems a good time to get some 4WD action for the winter as the M2 is all but useless when the temps drop.

Haha funny because it was the first thing I checked. They are Michelin PS4's and plenty of life in them. Will keep an eye out for that as I've still a year warranty left.

Based in the UK so don't get Car Fax, but I've seen service history and no advisories from either of the two it's had. I actually test drove one where the breaks were squeaking, so might look at getting the pads done if this is the case.

Thanks everyone for your help.
