A G60 i5 BEV is not hard to believe. And a high output version of that car is a logical next step.
However, at this point I would still stop short of expecting a BEV to be branded as an M5 as soon as next generation. It is not impossible of course, but I suspect the PHEV model alone to wear that name. Now, does that mean there will be no M branding on the high output i5? No. In fact, it seems likely at this point. And perhaps it will be named something new and more exciting than simply "i5 M". But not M5, IMHO - not yet. Post 2030? Yes. |

Another opinion on claims in the CAR article:
https://evbite.com/1000-hp-electric-...t-in-2024/amp/ The F90 will be all but outdated by either of these cars. No wonder M5's lose so much value over the years.

This is why BMW did not change the engine much from the last M5, they knew electrics would be in their future.

Not surprised if BMW went this route, along with other models too. Despite what we might think of electric cars or if they are more environmental friendly than ICEs, public perceptions is what it matters.
Tesla market cap is now more than Mercedes, BMW, and VW group combined (which is insane when come to think about it), I would think shareholders are pushing BMW to get electrified. |

Biggest challenge to any future electrified vehicle is weight. They gotta get the weight of the batteries down or else these "sports cars" of the future will turn like a whale. The Porsche Taycan is a laughable 5,100lbs and eats through tires once you put that car in a turn.

It's basically all because of Elon Musk and there last no denying the capability that can be achieved in 1/4 mile and 0-60 times with Electric Cars. But M is changing more to those two measurements of performance because of Elon. For example, we don't see BMW really making M cars that are lighter weight to achieve magnificent Nurburgring lap times anymore, instead what's selling is the notion that electric cars offer less pollution and better everyday usable performance to Joe rich guy who has his choice between a Tesla and a BMW. In that sense, yes perception can matter. At least we'll get one more generation of a Naturally Aspirated Porsche GT3 before Euro regulations kill everything. Also forgot to mention Cadillac is at least trying to keep things pure. Soon we'll see a four door sedan with a 650hp Supercharged engine with RWD only and a manual transmission with a weight of maybe under 4,200lbs. It won't have the quality fit, finish, and luxury of a German car but it'll be fun. As I've said before, not everyone wants a soulless 0-60 and 1/4 mile car.

I would only be interested if they added more character or flair/drama to the M5. It may beat a lot of cars in a straight line, but its too numb and easy.

A 435 mile battery would put them on top of Tesla along with being able to connect to a 400v charger.

This new M5 is going to be so heavy. I will wait and see what they come up with.
