Dinan/Weistec turbo upgrades

It appears the M5 crowd are more open to modifying their cars as opposed to the X5M crowd hence why I’m posting here.

Currently investigating if it’s worth doing rods and piston upgrade and running upgraded turbos, has anyone had any experience with mild builds on these engines and what results are they producing. I’ve found wesitec and dinan do upgrades, any thoughts or comments from those with experience?

Ha! I was complaining about the same thing with this crowd…more interested in how to cram another piece of carbon fiber somewhere then doing some engine mods. Rods and pistons along with some hybrid turbos and you can push some really fun power. Probably inevitable you’d want or need to upgrade trans as well if you want to maximize power/tuning potential. I mean i get it, it’s no small or inexpensive undertaking pulling and building the engine on these things.

Don’t get me wrong I’m lowering mine and throwing wheels on, tossing up if I’ll do a front lip & skirts as well.

I really want to do rods & pistons & turbos and shoot for 900-1000awhp , 7k delivered ex Europe and good for 1200awhp.

The scary part is, no local shops or tuners in Sydney want to touch the engine build. My preferred tuner said there could be 15-25k in additional one time use parts between one time bolts, tensioners and chains by the time it’s done.

Of course it’s worth doing. If you have a f90 you don’t necessarily need to do turbos as stock turbos can go farther than what the motor can is what evolve has said

We need Evolve to send its engine upgrade guy on a world tour. I think he does it for $20k out the door, pulling motor, disassemble, reassemble with new bearings, rods and pistons, and reinstalls. If other parts need replacement the cost goes up. There is a thread with a video you can watch that has the details.

At 45k miles, my motor is probably not a candidate for this “lite” rebuild but one never knows until it is disassembled. I would probably order a built long block from one of the known and reputable US builders and install it myself.

Evolve at first had RK Autowerks do it. Saw on their story they had it for 16k

I’ve been told the block is about 30k, my local dealer couldn’t price one. Said it comes up as not available in the system.

Mine has 5,000kms on it so still fresh. I’d imagine yours wouldn’t need anything else, worse case bearings ?

Well I’m almost at 40k miles on my M8 Comp and will be rebuilding it this summer to forge bottom end and go with some full frame turbos. Higher mileage is perfect time to rebuild. Can inspect everything, replace anything worn. Fresh gaskets and seals throughout, better than new.

I was looking at Carbahn's different engine replacement options. That looks to be easier

25k usd for rod & piston upgrade and it’s a core exchange, that’s effectively 15k to strip the long block and reassemble.

Would love to know what the cost of the one time use parts is in these.

It’s about $4k to buy all gaskets, seals, bolts, hose clamps etc that needed for full rebuild.

I guess my question is why it with an X5M. An M5 is way lighter and will be faster with less mods.

Have a workshop remove the engine and send it over to us!

Probably not when you must pay for shop rental, tool access, lodging, food, and time for every hour the mechanic is traveling.

I do believe that Pure Performance out of Texas is ~$20k labor included for a complete rebuild. Another $4k-$6k depending on turbos and you should be able to support 1000whp. Might need to add some fueling or meth as well.

20k is reasonable.

I’d like to make 1000awhp in street trim on street fuel, we get 98 (Ron) here. Wouldn’t complain with a daily driven 9.6-9.8 second car
