... which is why I did not opt for a the Nav system in my car. I didn't see the point of paying $2500 for a feature that Google Maps provides on my smart phone.

My nav is fantastic, I don't know why you guys have such troubles. Always spot on accurate. Has drastically improved over the course of the 8 years I have enjoyed iDrive. I even waited the half model year to get the newest version from 2013 to 2014.

My experience tells me if you are having that much of an issue with BMW's current navigation system, the problem is user error. The system works well when set up correctly.

In the beginning, I had huge problems, but learned it was defaulting to Eco Pro routing. Once I turned this off, it's been fine.

I agree that bmw nav can sometimes lead you in a round about way but in all fairness ive had google maps give me some bad directions on a number of occasions. Its the best in dash navi ive had on any of my cars and the traffic display is awesome to look at on the drive back from work. Not to mention if you get the nav pckge in USA it gives you a couple other things like the extended instrument cluster. Its not perfect but it does a decent job and also looks great.

It's all about how you use it. I personally like it to navigate to common places so that way it notifies me of traffic (such as to work or home), and redirect as needed.
I really like with the 2014 version how if you add multiple destinations they will show it on the map as well as a blue indicator. All in all, I'm very happy with the investment. Sure beats relying on cell phone service, speed of maps reloading, and sticking an obtrusive phone to the dash |

Oh don't say that. Have you tried the awful system in Nissan, terrible one in Ford, and the bad one on Cadillac? All 3 would compete handily with lexus for worst nav ever.

I use the nav to get me going or, even better, tell me where i am. But once going I'll ignore it if it gives out less than ideal routes. |

BMW sucks with technology. Not enough things are standard compared to the competition, and when they are, they lack in functionality.
Seriously wish they would just give up iDrive and let Apple handle the UI with CarPlay, or at least offer a CarPlay Technology Packages so we could bypass iDrive altogether. |

I've never had that issue before. Even with dynamic routing, it does a surprisingly good job of navigating me around the cluster fuck that is the metro DC area. It did, once, tell me to turn left when the HUD and iDrive screen were telling me to turn right though.
It's also done surprisingly well driving through NYC. I don't see anything really wrong with iDrive aside from an occasional hiccup with Bluetooth audio streaming. If the navi ever did take me in a slightly out of the way direction, it wouldn't surprise me. It's technology and tech is never perfect but does it's best. I've had navi in my last car (an Infiniti) and it largely worked well (the dynamic routing worked like crap though) but even that would, on occasion, take me slightly out of my way. As would Google Maps on my iPhone. Once when I put in an address in Apple Maps (and by "once" I mean several times, especially when it first came out), it'd just assume I'm going to that exact same address in a completely different state...or country... You just can't fully dependent on a bunch of computer code and algorithms and exercise some personal judgement and common sense. Don't end up like those people who drive into lakes and ditches because their navi told them to. |
