My production date was the third week in March, 2006. But wouldn't you be more interested in the production date for the tranny?

so far, that's the problem. there is only one part number for the tranny and nobody knows if anything inside has been uprated.
Alex, with the blue Coupe in Montreal, who got a new tranny says that this one works correctly but still has the same part number. If BMW caught the problem and fixed it, we need to unite and get a proper recall. That's why i'm building a case for everyone's benefit.

Saw a post over at bimmerfest where the Dealer was instructed by "Germany" to adjust the clutch and shift/gate linkage? Any updates by anyone else?

do you have the link?
my car is still at BMW Laval and BMW Canada sent a lead engineer from Toronto this week to work on it. He's been at it for three days now.

Just wanted to bump this thread to get an update from people who took their cars into bmw to have this 2nd gear synchro problem addressed. I've been experiencing the same problem lately and it's pretty annoying.

Hi,
First post. Two week owner of a 2003 3.0. It has been 6 years since I previously owned a car with manual, so I thought the grind into second was my fault when test driving. Anyways, it is persisting. It doesn't happen quite as often now that I am somewhat adjusting to this idiosyncrasy. It still sucks. I can't shift hard into second. My 1983 Audi Quattro had a better gear box. Most of my grinds happen when I am above 3000 RPM when in first gear. The gear grinds when I shift into second even when I have the clutch depressed down to the floor. The only time when it doesn't grind (most of the time) is when I can dump the clutch within a split second of my shifting into second while maintaining the RPM within a few hundred between gears which is pretty difficult to do. Also, it doesn't grind when I let the RPM drop below 2000 RPM before shifting into second which is what I do most of the time. One person stated in another post that he removed his CDV and installed a SSK, and his 2nd gear woes went away. I think I will go that route. |

Hi,
Third post, Second gear grind symptom has dimished quite a bit since my last post. Perhaps I am more accustomed to driving the Z subconsciously more cautiously when engaging 2nd gear. Also, I got a ZHP shift knob lastnight. I've been driving the car without being consciously cautious when engaging 2nd gear all day and didn't grind at all. In fact, I tried to get it to grind by shifting "normal" and still no grind. There's still a question of excessive notchiness when going into 2nd gear (1st gear isn't that smooth either half the time). The other gears are smooth and engages with more alacrity and is more assuring. Maybe I am "burning in" the gears... |

Yeah, being the market I'm curious about this as well; did you get the new part #?
Also, Car & Driver mentions 2nd gear grinding in the August 2006 issue comparing the M coupe to the Porsche Cayman. |

Or you can just start off in 2nd gear when you're not in a hurry. Like when you're trying to get out of a snow bank...

Mine was grinding too.
Took it to dealership and they replaced the entire tranny. Shifts like butter now. Took the car to Bob Smith BMW in Calabasas, CA. They replaced it two weeks ago.
