New M5 owners whine on startup question
Hello, just bought a 2019 BMW M5 Comp with 4,000 miles and noticed this noise on startup. Searched the forums but didn’t find anything. Anyone else have this noise ?

Thanks for your input.
I just took the car into the dealership and we started a new M5 and it did not have the sound in my video. They are going to keep it there and trouble shoot but the tech said it sounded like the turbos but wasn’t sure if it was normal. Last edited by djgogls; 10-23-2019 at 01:11 PM.. |

That is not present on mine nor the 4 others that I tested back when I was deciding on base vs comp. It sounds like pump initiation or fluid regulator/bypass valve related as it is a brief sound with a rapid pitch up deflection when the sound terminates likely coinciding with a build up in system pressure and then dampening of some resonance but I digress lol. The tiniest tiny air bubble ( recent low fuel / fluid changes / severe position or G load / loose fitting ) can affect a resonance within a closed / semi- closed fluid system of which there are multiple on this car. If I had to guess ( which I am) my money would be on fuel, then next lubrication systems. Crazy amount of pressure, capacity requiring bypass, and assist pump/ regulation for operation and cool down functions. Any chatter like that on the brake or tranny fluidics side would be throwing warning codes like crazy as those system tolerances are watched like a hawk. Thank you for the opportunity to exorcise my OCD for the evening.

Now that's funny -- I literally just made a thread about this a couple of days ago.
Mine isn't as loud but it's there alright. I will get a video of mine as well. Keep us posted on what it is.

Wow crazy. My car is still at the shop. They reached out to the BMW tech team about the issue. Advisor does not think the sound is normal.

As an M5 owner, I don't whine at all when I startup my car.
In fact, it's all smiles! |

That is not normal. Techs always say that is how all the cars are when they have no clue on what it is and to just blow you off. Have you started the car with hood open to try to narrow down the source?

Ok, I just listened to that sound clip and it's definitely not normal and not the pump priming sound that I was referring to, which actually occurs before you start the car. Very curious to hear what the tech says that noise is - bearing of some sort?

Thanks for everyones feedback. My car has been at the shop almost a week. Update today is that the dealer is waiting for instruction from the assigned bmw tech on what part to replace. They suspect it’s the oil pump but not sure. Will update back once I know for sure what the problem is.

My car has done this from new. Hope you find out what it is. I do feel that my car is maybe down a bit on performance.

Actually I have listened to a few other F90 M5s on cold start and they have all done this, so I don't think there is anything to worry about.

Update: still don’t have my car back interesting that a lot of you are reporting the same noise. Makes me wonder if it’s normal but still sounds odd to me.
The update today from the dealership is that BMW is sending a factory engineer to inspect my oil pump. They also said that there are no oil pumps in stock even in Germany and my car is going to be there a while longer. Crazy because I just bought the car and had it shipped from Texas to CA. Drove it only one day before it went to the dealer. Don’t even know what M5 ownership is like yet but hopefully will see better days haha! Thanks for the feedback. |

Wow not great! what is it with dealerships......just as useless here in the UK. There is either a major issue with a lot of cars or there is no issue at all and its normal. Lets see what this factory engineer says. Hopefully its someone who has been out of school for a good few years with experience...….
