Tesla Model 3 Performance and M5 ZF

One of these baby Teslas was in front of me today at the lights on a long, straight and boring stretch of highway 9. He leapt off the lights on green so I, of course, went along for the ride. It took me until 70mph before I properly reeled him in. We laughed and did it again side by side at the next light so I prep'd launch control and tried again. Obviously, I had to activate launch control when the light changed but it lost me only a fraction of a second and this time I passed him entirely by the time I hit 3rd.

The takeaway: while the ZF is decent, it's no DCT and it's starting to get on my nerves.

Wrt/ the Tesla: the car looks about as pedestrian as any model 3 but holy $hit it's got some grunt from a dig (as expected being electric but surprising when you watch it happen).

Assertion: I'm not sure a non-tuned M5--Comp or otherwise--would catch it before 3-digit speeds.

I test drove a P90D--the 100 is no doubt another level--it had vicious acceleration and made me giggle but it lacked any feel or involvement. I've never felt more like a passenger in the driver's seat. The next day, I went and picked up an RS7.

The lack of exhaust sound not matched up with the sheer acceleration always has me doubtful. I have rode in several 100D's and 90D's but have yet to drive one. I get it; I loved my 2 RS7's- the unique sportback design is so polarizing to me.

“For me” , I need Blunt Force Acceleration, but it HAS to have the sensory peripherals to go with it. Fast and hmmmmmm will never cut it.

Be careful that there are dual engine Tesla 3's out there - which it must have been to hold you off until 70 MPH. The regular Tesla 3's are 13.0 cars.

I am the same. I love the performance - but zero sensory affect and I am out.

The Dual Motor is implied by it being a Performance model... right? It was a Performance spec car so I assumed the independent AWD setup. I can't imagine it holding its own in any other spec.

From what I read just now - yes - performance does denote the dual motors. And to my point - as the single is a 13.0 car - there is no way he could play with an M5.

Marvelous little accelerators those Teslas. Wish I didn't hate the interiors as much as I do. They are way fast off the line, other than that I can't get excited by anything else.

Coincidentally, I test drove a Model 3 Performance. (Dropped off a vehicle at my PPF dealer and the Tesla dealer next door).

I was relatively impressed with the car, technology was great, a bit spartan on the interior and the acceleration to 70 mph made me giggle. Felt like it falls on it's face over 70, but for $60k - I'd consider one. The price of a P100D (X or S model) doesn't make sense to me - although I want the performance.

No sound is the biggest issue I have with the electric stuff but I think it's inevitable that I get one.

I have had a Tesla Model S since 2013. Love the car. It's just smooth, easy to jump in and operate. While it doesn't have things like Apple Car play, the rest of the tech doesn't feel like it's 6-7 years old. The car handles well, fast as all get out and I still get 285 miles of range (P85). When the refreshed Model S arrives late fall I may trade my current MS for a new one.

I am also really looking forward to the 2020 Roadster (probably more like 2021). I have put a deposit down and I cannot wait.

I have both. The immediate torque and AWD help the Model 3 Performance tremendously off the line. The mute sensation of the electric vehicle can make the ride numbing to a degree but it's an awesome vehicle.

Current Model 3 Performance owner here. Sold my 335i for it. Gotta tell you, the launch is the best part of the car. The interior is cheap and the tech is great, but buggy. I bought the car due to my 25 mile drive in Atlanta. The FSD software is dangerous and NOT smooth at all.

I've been cross shopping a few different vehicles to replace the Tesla. The 2020 M5 Comp is high on my list of potential replacements. Added two photos of her because why not.

Never thought I'd be chiming in on this side of the conversation but I just sold my RS7 performance for a Model S P100D.

My RS7 was fun but didn't excite me like my tuned F10 M5 I had before it. Common Sense pointed me to the F90 but I thought I might as well try the Tesla. This Tesla from a dig is only comparable to a tuned 911 Turbo S I drove last year (991.1). And even still, the Tesla feels maybe a touch more violent.

After 3 months of ownership, it's fun but kind of boring I must admit (I do have auto ADHD, like most of us). I love the car, I just miss the roar of engines and shifting gears.

To sum it up, if you have a "healthy" garage with many gas powered options, a Tesla is 1000% worth it and will be a fun addition. But, for a do everything, one car garage, there will never be anything like a BMW M5.

I rented a p100d for a day a month before buying my M5C. The interior on the Tesla’s is shockingly poor for the price. And in a hot AZ summer, the AC had to shut off because of overheating. With sunrooof shades either, it was an awful driving experience.

The acceleration was like nothing else though! The tech was annoying, even though I love all things tech! All interactions on a screen was simply annoying, slow, and unintuitive. BMWs buttons have unique functions and you can do a lot without even looking at anything. Not so with Tesla’s. But, they are the future and one day I will likely daily drive one.

Your experience is not anything like mine. As I posted earlier, I love my P85 and have had it for almost 7 years. I have never known their interface to be slow, in fact, with the lone exception of the web browser, it's just as fast, if not faster than the M5's display. I also found the screen to be extremely intuitive.
We all have certain likes and expectations, and I get not everyone will appreciate the same things. YMMV, but I have found the Model S to be a compelling vehicle.

Vic I'm surprised you haven't driven one yet.

I love mine, it's not the car the M5 is but for daily city driving I prefer Tesla over the M5. From the stoplight or gap shooter it is second to none as you never have to worry about what gear or rpm you are in. Also when you lift off, the car will brake, it's unique feeling, almost like you can push and pull the car with your foot.

But on the freeway no, it is terrible as the battery can't hold long acceleration. A couple hard pull and the car will go into limp mode.

Honestly I dont know why either- maybe cause Ill actually like the car even without the exhaust.

So you are saying just 2 hard bursts on the freeway and it becomes a weak 100 mph trapper??

I can't speak about the Model S, but freeway driving doesn't necessarily change the experience, at least in the M3Performance. You don't get the same kick in the pants off the line when you floor it after a certain threshold as is indicated in the following dyno graph of both a Model 3 and Model 3 Performance
