Agreed, I hate when it happens! It's still hit or miss, and think it's more susceptible to squealing, when a lot of brake dust has been generated between washes.

My 2018 M5 was squealing terribly at around 3500 miles. Had front pads and rotors replaced. Was quiet for about 4 weeks, then the squeal returned, although much quieter (and a higher pitch) than before. Tolerable for now, but eventually, my service advisor will be getting a visitor....

Do other 120k cars have this issue with steels/ccb? Eg Panamera Turbo, E63S, etc.

Porsche seems to have a lot of brake squeal that they need to published a video explaining squeaky brakes.

https://www.motortrend.com/news/pors...queaky-brakes/

Mercedes on the other end seems to have less brake issues, at least according to my google search.

I didn't have one peep from my 2018 E63s with steel brakes. My 2018 GT3 makes no noise. Haven't owned a Porsche that made noise with ceramics since 2012

The M5 sounds like a dump truck

I did. For a while it stopped, but it is now back. It doesn't do it after a wash and during certain weather.

Mine were bad but I had it corrected by bmw during the 1200 service. There's no squeaking anymore.
They mentioned that they had a lot of break dust embedded that a regular wash wouldn't have gotten too.

Brought my car in.
First visit they burnished the brakes. That didn't fix it

Second visit they replaced the pads and rotors that didn't fix it

Third visit they still acknowledge an issue but state that's how M performance brakes operate.

Don't have time to keep going back and fourth so it is what it is. The squeaking doesn't really bother me it's the grinding feel that bothers me. Like metal on metal right before coming to a stop.

I'm surprised they put that much effort into a squeal, but you mention grinding? I guess you are right, it's more of a sensory thing...

My dealer basically told me that's how M performance brakes are. "Don't buy a M car if you don't want the squeal". This is my first BMW so I don't have much leverage with the dealer, I may just have to wait for some aftermarket brake pads.

That's a crock, poor answer...

I got the same answer regarding my M4. Apparently it’s across all of the M cars with steel brakes.

Interesting, my last full blown M, was a '99 M3 which didn't squeal, but was 20 yrs ago! All my M-sports since, also did not squeal.

Mine started squealing at ~3,500 miles and haven't let up. Doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it either. Washes help some times but other times do nothing and the breaks will squeal right away after. Hard braking is also hit or miss. Did some emergency stops from 70 mph on back roads and the breaks still squealed afterwards.

Oddly, some times they are completely silent but I'd say about 75% of the time they squeal.

I traded my 2105 Me (F80) that I purchased new in July of 2014 for the F90 in August of 2018. I had the steel brakes on the F80 and never had any squeal sound from the brakes.

I just noticed my F90 is immitting a squeal at slow speed braking. My wife thinks the Sonax wheel cleaner is causing the problem.

My M2 has not squealed since the day I got it 1.5 years ago.
M5 squealed for the first 1000km but has since gone away after some hard braking sessions. Occasional squeals if used soft braking on a short drive. but nothing major like when first got it

I am not in a place I can take it to the dealer for the next couple months. Any tricks people have done in the past to help it? Was thinking about spraying water on the calipers, maybe there is something stuck in one of the pads.
Been bad on mine. Dealership "fixed it" last night. So far so good. I've asked for details on what they did.

Please share what they did and which dealer. My dealer at T&C just use a power washer to rinse the brake.

I hate to say it guys...

But this is a high performance car. Brake squeal on performance pads is common. If they make the squeal on steels go away, the pads (which are ALREADY too weak for track) will be even worse.

It's a compromise. Stellar braking at high temp, or no squeal on steels. Many others (including myself) are looking for tougher pads that will certainly squeal MORE. But they'll last longer on track.
