Is it the SAF-XJ line item below the O-ring? I believe it's the same fluid for both.
Update: I checked back with the service advisor and he said the diff oil is the same for front and rear - SAF-XJ (Item number 832514), which is the reason it's listed once on the invoice. He said some service techs will have slight variance on how they list out the service performed on the invoice. The key thing to look for is SAF-XJ(or 832514), to ensure they changed the diff oil.

The spec is for two different fluids front vs rear.
The rear calls for the more expensive higher rated G4 fluid. It's synthetic. The front uses the lower rated stuff. Not sure why not put better fluid in both? Mike

Thanks, Mike. I called back to clarify. You are correct and the service advisor went and spoke with the tech and HE FORGOT to change the front diff fluid. This is the M tech at Century West. He said he completely forgot the new M5 is AWD. Lesson learned - call out everything they need to do so you don't have my experience!!!

I'm considering DIY for this service! I have a great indi mechanic who will do it right the first time.

Very glad this was posted. I took a look at the invoice from my 1200 mile service and indeed, the dealer put the fluid for the front diff into the rear as well and just handed the car back to me. When I asked about it, they 'were never told' and said they'd have the proper fluid in a few weeks and that BMW NA was advising that they perform the 1200 maintenance with the incorrect rear diff fluid and then bring the cars back when the correct fluid is in stock.
I guess it really doesn't matter, it will all get sorted out, but pays to be informed and stay on top of these things. I seriously doubt I would have received a call from the service department requesting I bring the car back so they can put the proper fluids in the car had I not said anything. |

You now have an oil of the wrong viscosity in your rear differential, ie. the G2 type. That is an 80W90 weight oil. So go ahead and use your launch control, have fun. If they can make the "call" to put that incorrect oil in the rear diff then WTF, why not at the very least put the CORRECT weight oil in there in the meanwhile? This is asinine. I went through the same nonsense with the failed suspension in my 2003 RS6. The shops are simply not able to make a rational decision on the RIGHT THING TO DO. IE just put the regular shocks in my car and send me on my way. So now I have to deal with this level of stupidity. When I asked about putting the oil from rear diff of the M550ix in my car, they could not even make a reply. Just dumbfounded. I guess us folks who buy $100,000 plus cars are just a bunch of dopes and our opinion does not matter at all. Mike

I'm assuming that when the right oil comes it, it can be drained well enough not to have any damage in the future. I do plan on using the launch control, but I guess not right now.

It just irks me that they did not at least put the correct viscosity fluid in it for you. Mike

I found it listed on ECS but no specs on the weight. I found that weight information I listed above elsewhere. Where did you find your info on the Castrol product? Mike

The difference between the two types of rear diff oil is the addition of more friction modifiers (FM) than normal diff oil. The oil put in mine does not have the additional friction modifier but it is also synthetic 75w140, just like the FM version. According to two techs I spoke with, the addition of more friction modifier was a US only requirement for older M cars (E46, E92, F80) since the diff would make groaning noises during low speed cornering, which in normal and does not mean anything is wrong. US customers apparently complained of the groan and BMW added friction modifiers, which actually slightly reduce the performance of the diff. The diff in the F10 M5 did not have this issue and you were able to use SAF-XJ without any noise from the diff. You should be fine with either one. If you get 83-22-2-357-992 (SAF-XJ) and you hear groaning noises during low speed cornering, then you may want the one with the Friction Modifier (SAF-XJ-FM part 83 22 2 447 362). With that said, diff chatter is bad, groaning is perfectly fine. No noise from my car after 100 miles since the change. SAF-XJ is a synthetic, very high quality diff oil that's actually used in the E63s rear diff. Based on all the research on differentials I have done these past few days, I'm sticking with the SAF-XJ. Check out this thread on why people prefer no friction modifier in their diff: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1317480

The dealer expects the oil in by the end of this week so I hope to get the service early next week. I am at 1225 miles. I got my inspection done today. NOT IMPRESSED. A bit crooked would you agree? They are going to replace that friggen sticker next week and better get it dead on straight lined up with the VIN plate. I cleaned off all the old glue myself. That is "deliberate" crooked. Not Oops Crooked. Mike

Hasn’t seen any activity on this thread in a while.
Wondering how everyone has been doing with the 1200 mile service? Have my appointment scheduled for next Monday. I was told twice they have the correct fluids. Only time will tell but curious whether it’s still an issue. |

G1 vs. G2 vs. G4
just had my 1200 mile service done. They didnt have the right oil and had to wait 3 days and then when they got it in, they put in G1 and G2 instead of G2 and G4. Based on advise from another member, I will be having them replace the oil and asking for an extended warranty from BMW since I have no idea what the impact of having the wrong oils in there is.

Just had my 1200 service done. I asked multiple times if they had the correct fluids in stock. They verified they did have enough for 1 car so we were good to go c
Just got the car back with the service order and looks like they used G4 & G1!! Based on others in here...looks like G2 should have been used. Can anyone who has had their service completed confirm? If so, should I be giving them a call and get this fixed or is it not a big difference? |
