It's F90. Surprising we know the fuel consumption and emissions but not the horsepower, or why this is always included in any correspondence in Europe. Maybe it's a legal thing?

But it's based on the G30, why on earth is it called F90?

Not sure their logic but the previous was just the f10 M5 though the m3 has a different number than the regular 3 series.

Current M3 is an F80 so there should be no surprises, not the first time this has been done.

Current M3 is based on the F generation platform though. New M5 is based on the G generation platform! So this hasn't been done before.

Maybe its due to the engine being the same in the f platform m5?

"E", "F" and "G" aren't really "generations". When the run out of one they moved to the next. It has worked out that (I think) all CLAR-based non-M models have been assigned a G letter, but I don't know if this was intentional. It looks like F8X and F9X were blocked out for M awhile back, and they still have some left. (Anyone in BMW R&D please feel free to correct me!)

M cars are changed enough that BMW can issue them a different chassis number.

Very simple. They are carrying over the old engine. Therefore they will not use the new G designation. Mercedes AMG has carried over old engines to new body styles and then updated the engine with a life cycle refresh. BMW has never done this before with an M car but they will introduce a new v8 4L for the LCI. I think the M8 prototype is using that new engine simply because the sound is very different from the current exhaust notes. Next LCI M5 might be called the G30 M5, but time will tell.
