Odometer Accuracy
Guys, have any of you noticed or suspected that your odometer reading is incorrect? I have had my M5C since March 2019 and I'm regularly baffled by how many miles I have - or it appears that I have - put on the car. My commute to work is less than 10 miles each way. I do drive it plenty on the weekends. I have often wondered if something was off. Today I am almost certain that the odometer leaped 10 miles in less than a mile. Have any of you wondered/experienced the same?

Mine is at 2800 miles in less than 2 month. I kept pleading to my wife for being innocent but she thinks I'm sneaking out in the night just to have fun. I'll have to show this thread as proof.
On a serious note, I feel the same but didn't dig much into it. I'll start taking notes to check for accuracies. |

I was thinking the same thing a few days ago. Would there be anyway to prove that the odometer jumps?

So on the last several BMW's I have owned I have noticed that the speedometer is 3-4 mph off your actual speed. i.e. if the speedometer reads 65 you are actually going 62 (confirmed via GPS speed). Not sure if that translates directly to the odometer, but if it does it would translate to about a 5% overage so for every 10,000 miles you actually drove the odometer would read 10,500 miles.
Once again I am not sure if the odometer and speedometer are directly linked but I would confirm whether or not your speedometer is off with a GPS app on your phone or an old school vehicle GPS. |

Odometers are accurate. They are required by federal regulations to be accurate. Speedometers are allowed to read over but not under. If speedometers read under, car manufacturers would get sued out of existence every time there was a speed related accident. It is common for speedometers to read 2 or 3%, or more, over the real speed. That's how they calibrate them. Odometers though, generally are very accurate, as long as you have OEM sized tires.
