Frustrations of the Flat Tire

Well it finally happened. Left rear tire went flat. Luckily I made it to my garage before it went completely flat and ruined a rim. Of course these cars come with no spare. There is a sealant and a pump in the trunk you can use if needed. I called the dealership and BMW roadside assistance. They did not recommend using the sealant with non run-flats. Not sure why??

Road side assistance sent a flat bed tow truck and they delivered my car to the dealership. The dealership calls me a says that "We don't fix flats for liability reasons and we will replace you're Pirelli tire. Unfortunately we don't have one in stock." Ugh... It takes 4 days to have one at the dealership. Luckily I do have a car to drive in the meantime and luckily I had purchased the tire/wheel coverage. I'm happy that this will cost no money but a little irritated my car is out of commission for 4 days for a simple flat. I've never had a flat inconvenience me for more than an hour in the last 30 years. It could be really a problem if you were driving out in the middle of nowhere..

My questions are:
1) Why does BMW not include a spare of some type?
Is it because they want to reduce weight in a high performance car?
Is it to reduce expense?
Is it to conserve trunk space?

2) Have any of you guys purchased the space saver spare available
from here? Fairly expensive.

http://www.bimmerzone.com/BMW_Perfor...F90M5-KIT.html

3) Would you have any hesitation in sealing the tire and just taking it to a local tire shop to repair? If I didn't have the wheel/tire coverage I would strongly consider this option. Also I read somewhere that the sealants could damage the TPM sensor. Does anyone know if this is true?

https://www.amazon.com/Slime-50107-S...07643833&psc=1

I'm not really wanting to rant against BMW but rather try to be ready with the right solution if my tire goes flat and not leave me and the family stranded. I plan to discuss this with the dealership when I pick up my car in a few days..

I heard a weird sound coming from the rear and found a massive screw in the RR tire. Went to local shop and had it plugged. I check the tire pressure periodically and have not seen any decrease in tire pressure for a month. I have no concerns.

Same thing happened to me two weeks ago. Pulled out of my garage, immediately went flat (bolt was jammed in and popped out). I pulled the wheel off, looked in the trunk and found the weird metal can of sealant and pump. Threw that to the side lol and plugged it myself. Took the dealer 10 days to get the tire. Why they don't stock them I have no idea. Big dealer too.

Just went thru that with a rear tire. Had to wait 10 days for the new tire which was on national backorder.

I have a plug kit in the trunk. I have plugged several tires on various cars and driven those tires until tread life was over without an issue. I also have a set of snows and carry one with me on long drives as a spare and of course have a jack. In winter I carry a summer tire.

I did this with my RS6 for 14 years but at least that car came with a blow-up spare, pump and a jack. Never tried the blow up spare. I got one flat in 14 years but was close to home and just plugged the tire. Not sure why Audi saw it fit to deliberately make the spot for the spare too small for a full sized spare by having 4 bolt heads there protruding into the space, but the spare fit in the trunk at least (next to the huge battery compartment LOL).

Begin Rant.

Anyway driving any car without a spare tire is just dumb. BMW can kiss my )*(&)(*& A$$ for not including a spare or at least the option of a spare with the purchase of a $120,000 car. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb. Weight savings my )(*&)(*)&. I bought a spare for my M2 which also did not come with a jack or a space tire.

End Rant.

BMW, get a clue, put a spare in these cars. Sure maybe too many people who drive cannot change a flat tire themselves anymore, but at least if there is a proper spare and a proper jack in the trunk, the road side guy can change it for the driver and not ruin the car with the wrong jack.

So we have sealant, but they don't recommend using it? Huh?

They don't fix flats for liability reasons?? Then how does Discount Tire get away with it? Now if it's close to the sidewall or on a worn tire, sure. But just a blanket statement like that seems a little lazy to me. Luckily you had the W/T policy. Discount has patched many a tire for me with nary an issue. Granted i'm not tracking the cars.

I definitely worry about taking any kind of trip with the family without a spare. My parents live out in the country and I'd be SOL if it happened.

Shellbmb and Aronis. My thoughts exactly. For a road trip I'm going to take a spare. I really can't see patching the tire on the side of I-35 but maybe once I get home.

And keep in mind, a plug kit only works if you then have a way to pump air back into the car and the hole cannot be too close to the sidewall. I think the only option other than carrying a spare sliding around in your trunk is to have a patch kit and Co2 or mini air compressor

buy an extra wheel and put a tire on it. put it in the trunk.

Assume a stock front wheel will fit on the front or rear?

You should have the “Mobility Kit” in the left storage bin area of the trunk. Includes an OEM Air Pump, Tire Patch Kit and Tire Sealant to name a few items.

what you want to use is the patch kit per link as it is a quick permanent fix.....the sealant kit is temporary and not reliable.....yes you use the oem air pump in combination with patch kit in emergency ....no spares needed on 80% of flats otherwise tow truck (use spare tire on long trips)

Thank god for NYC where there's a tire shop on every block. I rather have my car totaled than bring it to BMW for a tire fix just so they can tell me to wait 90 days for a goddamn tire.

It’s it’s worn at all you should buy four. Welcome to Awd cars. And this is a serious amount of whining about something the last three cars I’ve bought has not had, a spare tire. If it’s a small hole fix a flat, if it’s bad, flat bed, and you are probably going to need four new tires.

It’s fine. Used it many times. It could break the tpms sensors in the wheel. Not a big deal.

Flew down to Houston from Dallas yesterday to pick up my new 2019 M5. had 175 miles at delivery. Drove around for a day leaving Houston 5 pm for 4 hour trip to dallas and FR tire pops going 50 mph smooth road no debris. Sealant/pump didn’t work towed to dealer forced to leave outside gate in sketch part of town. WTH. I’m ready to cancel lease deal and leave it with them if this gets any worse. Ok not really but now I have to chase them down at 7 am to see if I can drive it back or fly and deal with it later. Why did I come back to BMW again?

There are several cars with the same bolt pattern and bore as the M5, mostly Audis and Mercs in 19" or 20" that have a space saver wheel/tyre that should clear the standard brakes...you can pick up a used one on ebay pretty cheap...$100 or thereabouts.
Just need to find out which particular ones fits.
I did look into it a while ago but have lost my notes.
I think it included the S class merc w221 and Audi A4/A5.
I always carried a space saver wheel/tyre in my E46/E92/F80 M3s and it got me out of trouble a few times.

Bumping this old thread.
Dealing with screws in two different tires and while I was able to get to work and plug there, I think a spare is worthwhile (with a cheap
amazon jack and a lug wrench).
Looking through old threads there are two commercially available:
https://bimmerzone.com/products/bmw-...0bebb94a&_ss=r
https://modernspare.com/product/2017...e-kit-options/

The modernspare, while cheaper, still seems kind of expensive for what it is.
Has anybody bought a rim and tire on ebay or elsewhere and can confirm it works as a spare for steel brakes?
Would like to keep on hand for emergency.

Both will fit (front will fit back, back will fit front). Some idiot swapped mine front to back inadvertently. It ran fine (on the road).
