Tire temp question...

So last week I was driving along and got on the car a little bit to get on the express way. The car shook a little, nothing serious but I wanted to check the tire pressure to see if something was off. The only thing I did see which seemed odd is that my left front tire was reporting significantly higher temps than the others. Prior to this little burst of speed it was pretty much normal driving for the previous 20 miles or so. Do any of you guys have similar behaviors with your tire temps?

I see the same thing on my 2019 Base (PS4S). Front left runs noticeably hotter than the others, maybe it's my fat ass weighing down the car lol.

IIRC its a radiator in the front left wheel well heating up the tyre.
My display is slightly different, its has extra, the recommended tyre pressure for the actual temperature of the tyre.

The front left tire is heated by the auxiliary radiator, which runs hotter than the front right tire which is heated by the charge air cooler.

With all the other tires that cool i'd argue it wasnt running long or hard enough for the radiator to heat the tire. Possible that theres an alignment issue on that wheel?

Oil cooler there.

On track, I would need to start the driver front tire about 4 pounds less than the other three. lol.

I don't think its that as the car had an alignment at BMW less than 1000 miles ago.

Perhaps the sensor is bad. This shouldn't be normal at all.

Spot on. However, the temp difference looks significant. On my car, front left usually runs 3-5 degrees higher.

Adding one to the mix here. This one was at Lime Rock which is all right turns except one left hander.

However, WHAT TIRES are you running?

Over 40psi gets a little wiggly on all but super stickies (and THOSE are supposed to be run in the mid 30's).

Yeah. That was way too much psi on that run. Needed to start in very low 30's. Those were the stock pirellis. It was a little squirrely at the end of that run for sure.

I'm sure. 39 all around at the end of a run on DOT compounds is probably the max I'd run at. The michelins and pirelli's both act funky at that pressure when hot.

To the OP...

Normal my friend. Oil cooler is up there. LOTS o'heat coming from that. It's unfortunate for NA track junkies like me this is on the left front. Most NA tracks are run clockwise. Many euro tracks are run counter clockwise, and the oil cooler is heating the inner tire rather than the outer tire. Which is the way you would want it.

Surely most Euro tracks are run clockwise.
The majority of F1 tracks certainly are.

Does it depend which side of the road the country drives on?

All anti-clockwise. I know that most USA road courses are run clockwise and there are some run anticlockwise in Europe. I hadn't counted them all.

It would have been best for the clockwise tracks for the oil cooler to be venting on the right tire, but its heating already the overloaded tire. Maybe it warms it up quicker in cold weather keeping the car on the track?

I dunno. But it helped me cord my last set of hoosiers by overheating the left front.

All anti-clockwise.
The other 20 odd F1 tracks are clockwise IIRC.
Not that it really matters for the 99.99% of M5 owners who won't track their car.

…which is a shame but also correct. If you bought this car you owe it to yourself to go to a track event. Get in a novice group. Ride with an instructor in the passenger seat teaching you how to push the car. Its better than drugs.
