Post Factory Armored BMW Vehicles

Came across some info online (hint: there isn't much) about these factory armored vehicles BMW produces. Seems that the X5 and 7-Series are the two they offer, however I did see some brochures that offered a 5-Series as well. Very interesting nonetheless.

I called my dealer and while at first they were very apprehensive and thought I was making it up, they got back to me and confirmed that they can actually order these into the United States. I was told roughly $150,000 USD MSRP. Although it seems the major markets that receive these are Brazil/South America, South Africa, European Union, and Russia. They offer two levels of protection; Security and Security Plus. Basic differences is Security is protected against most small-arms, handgun caliber weapons, and Security Plus is protected against 7.62 variant weapons and higher calibers - along with additional security options such as pressurizing the vehicle, emergency lights, PA system, etc. Would love to see one in person and play around with it, apparently from an external point of view they are completely identical to the civilian models. Seems like the 7-Series from Tomorrow Never Dies wasn't too far from the truth.

Below are some online resources on these cars that I have found and consolidated. Have any of you guys heard or have experience with these factory armored cars?

Nope, they open just fine. Check out the video of the guys in South America I linked. I believe one of the appealing factors in these factory armored cars as opposed to aftermarket is they retain almost all of their OEM counter-part's functionality. Check out timestamp 2:35 in the first video I linked as well.

I figured as much, considering that there was not much information online in the first place! Even the salespeople at my dealership said that they had never heard of this "BMW Special Sales" program and that they have never had one delivered through them. Would be cool to have this thread be a consolidation of anyone who has more information on this topic. Would love to have an owner chime in if there are any out there. I am sure there has to be at least one or two members who have/had one of these beasts.

To stop 7.62 would need thicker glass than the doors can usually accommodate to open. Like in hum vee whole assembly slides down as unit like an old school house window

True. The X5 Security Plus and 750LI Security Plus has VR6 Ballistic protection, which is good against 7.62x39mm. I would imagine with achieving that rating it is the entire/majority of the vehicle. Keep in mind a lot of these are ordered for governments so I'm sure they have very good protections in place.

I'm not surprised. I bet Moscow Mercedes gets more G-Wagen orders than they know what to do with.

I came across several bulletproof E38s while I was searching for one. Ironically, Tupac's wasn't.

Agreed. In the government we refer to civilian armored vehicles as level 3 and level 4. Which is security and security plus. The level 3 vehicles we ride in have windows that roll down, but we still avoid opening the windows since it doesn’t function well. The level 4 windows are 2 inches or so in thickness and weigh over 50 pounds so no way in hell theyre opening and closing. Usually if you’re in an armored vehicle, opening the window will break the seal causing the vehicle to lose structural integrity. Also, opening the window in an armored vehicle defeats he purpose entirely.

I’ve only been in armored land cruisers and armored Toyota Hilux’s (Tacoma’s).

For New Zealand it was quite big news that Prince Harry came here a while ago. I remembered reading this article

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/108...-in-an-old-bmw

When I was in BMW Auckland yesterday looking at the new M850i and happened to see the same car parked outside. You could see the big black edges around the windows and the windows did look like they were very thick.

The tyres were these which have a huge load rating and Michelin's runflat system.

Does the F01 7-Series really look that "old" to these people? I guess compared to the newer one, sure. But come on, it still looks very modern. I am a staunch Capitalist, but this consumerist mindset really bothers me sometimes. They are calling a 5 year old BMW an "old BMW"....

I think it was because (again, small country) it was quite big news when we got the previous group of F01 7 series with all of the socialists complaining about the government spending so much money on cars. I'm sure BMW gave them a huge discount though

So when they were replaced with G12 7 series there was another big up-roar and of course everyone knows that they have new ones now. So I think that was the main point of the article, they are riding around in the old shape cars....so what is the reason?

If you can get it, maybe wear a bunch of gold and diamond jewelry, and take it to the worst neighborhood you can find. See if someone puts the armor to the test! A video of that would get you tons of views on YouTube.

A few years ago, my local MBZ dealer had an armored S Class for sale. It was ordered by a Columbian national; however, he was unable to take delivery due to unfortunate circumstances.
