For someone who is a retired BMW genius, you don't seem to know that much of the brand. A carbon-fibre roof will be a no cost option, just like on the "normal" M5. Why remove the option of having a sunroof for a model just because it is named "competition"?

Offering a sunroof on an M5 makes perfect sense, not only are the loss in performance or driving dynamics close to none, it is a family car after all. I'd rather question why there are convertible versions of 911:s instead, a car that is supposedly a sports car

Retired. Meaning, not in the game anymore. Meaning, I don't have insider info anymore. 2+2 = 4.

The Competition is suppose to be a more focused vehicle. Again, owners will enjoy them nonetheless.

I love that BMW stuck to useful, subtle tweaks like these to change the way the car feels without throwing away the practicality and usefulness of the M5 or without going too crazy with the price. I personally find ceramic brakes to be borderline useless (except for keeping wheels clean) so I’m glad they are optional for the people who like them. If I were buying one of these, I would definitely go for the carbon roof, though.

I don’t know if you have ever looked underneath a Black Series product but AMG has always shocked me with just how far they go to make the chassis, suspension, etc. of the Black Series models separate and MUCH more aggressive than other AMG vehicles. When you look under their skin, the extensiveness of habdling upgrades is very impressive and I love how they keep the interior very nice and luxurious as I would want in a Mercedes product. They get that “luxury track car” balance much, much, much more right than BMWs past several attempts at a similar formula (GTS, CS, etc) in my opinion.
I haven't had the pleasure of looking under a Black Series car and have no doubt they go all out. Thank you for your explanation though.

" The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today issued a final rule requiring rear visibility technology in all new vehicles under 10,000 pounds by May 2018. This new rule enhances the safety of these vehicles by significantly reducing the risk of fatalities and serious injuries caused by backover accidents. "

Sounds like BMW is ready to open themselves up for Class action with their greediness over options..
Doubtful. BMW has a fleet of lawyers and has had to deal with regulators before. They've known about the requirement for years. Rear view camera has been on every new 2018 BMW sold by BMWNA (IIRC). The rear view camera is also standard on the M5, and even the M5 comp. I am almost 99% certain that it may be a different rear view camera to be installed instead of the base one in order to operate with the surround view cameras.

Even if that's not the case, VIRs are notorious for showing selections in the wrong section. For example, our DAP package showed the LED lights as a sub option to it which was not the case for MY18 M3s, at all.

Bottom line, BMW is not about to "risk it all" for a backup camera in the US when it has inserted it into every car and earlier than it had to. They are not stupid. Once the ordering guide is posted or the first VIN comes out without exec pack we will see it as an included option.

Lastly, it's not clear if a private right of action is created by the regulation. May just be a fine or a refusal to certify for safety on the road by the NHTSA. I guess theoretically there could be a class action claim if enough people were injured due to the failure, and we could have a products liability action, but as an attorney, that seems like a headache that costs marginal to avoid.

All that nonsense above (from me) being said, I am with you in that it would be IDIOTIC for BMW to blatantly go against a regulation like this.

So where is this options list that's mentioned in the original post...? All I see is a spec list from a single '19 Competition vehicle.

Well I mean the no cost sunroof/carbonfibre choice has been here since the e9x, so it’s hardly something new. But why would more freedom of choice be a bad thing? While I would definitely choose the carbon roof, I still can see why people would do the contrary. In fact, during the summers I prefer to drive my 7er over my 5er just because of its sunroof

I was in the same boat as you prior to the Apple WWDC keynote this past Monday that "Apple announced support for third-party map applications in CarPlay. The company says that Waze and Google Maps will be supported on CarPlay with iOS 12." https://9to5mac.com/2018/06/04/apple-wwdc-app-updates/

This is will occur in the fall, having access to Waze is a game changer to avoid police radar, especially in a M vehicle.
Hmm. That is a big deal. I'm not big on waze, but my buddy swears by it.

is ZCP officially no longer an order code now? Now the models will be called "competition"?

That's what it appears to be, as the M2 is also like this.

No more ZCP, The "Competition" becomes a separate model all together.

A little different on M2 where the "M2 Competition" replaced the M2.

Everytime I play satellite radio and then touch my phone it switches off the radio and goes back to the apps screen. Also, when someone sends a text and I open it while listening to music, it reads it out loud and I can't find a way to shut that off. There are a few other things that are annoying and not helpful.

I hope you're right and I agree about the car navis being garbage at routing. I constantly have to check google maps on long drives to confirm I'm not being taken a retarded route.
Yep. Same here.
Waze will be great and the only thing I would really use. So it should be out in September?

Have you tried the new cloud connected Nav in the 2018 models? I find it very accurate.
It's not the accuracy that was the problem with other navs. It's the fact that Waze has police traps in it and it's traffic info is extensively faster and more accurate than anything else on the market.

It's algorithms for routing around traffic and finding the absolute fastest route are also in a league of its own.
Agreed. I never had an issue with accuracy. The rerouting that it usually does and the inaccuracy of traffic patterns is what irks me. You really have to monitor and keep verifying that the route you're going truly is the best/fastest route.

You mean like calling your local dealers?

If you want out of state call other dealers, I have done that one for my HP4
