That settles it... When my cup holders go I’m doing the LS Swap. I can’t wait around for the N52 to kick the bucket.

George, serious question... have you ever taken apart a BMW interior mirror? I'm trying to find out if the mirror head can be removed from the base (i.e. separate the ball joint without destroying it).
Never had to do that. Appears that body of mirror base that attaches to windshield has multiple Variants, and at least on mine (with Rain Sensor) there are R & L "halves" which separate (or shatter ;-) at least far enough to twist & extract the ball joint. Can't say that I understand the description. It seems to be an attempt to translate German instructions (which WERE probably clear to a German engineer) by someone who was "bi-lingual" but "totally clueless" when it came to actually doing the job.

Here's the TIS list of different Variants of the Mirror, and you just click on the Link that appears most like YOURS, and you will get "specific" (loosely speaking ;-) instructions:

The rearview mirror is for the E46 I just got a few weeks ago. The automatic dimming function has ceased operating. There is a company in Texas that replaces the auto-dimming mirror glass for a reasonable price. But I'm not a fan of auto-dimming mirrors because they do not react fast enough for me. So I want to graft a manual-dimming mirror onto the automatic mirror base. The guy who runs the company in Texas says it is not possible to add a "manual" mirror (head) to an "automatic" base.

I wasn't satisfied with his answer because I don't think he fully understood my question. Yet he is the expert since he disassembles mirrors for a living and I don't. But since I have multiple BMWs all near the same production period '05, '06, '08, and the E90 has a manual mirror, all the ball-sockets look the same to me, so I can't see why I can't remove the auto-dimming head from the E46 base and install a manual-dimming head in its place.

The TIS does not get into that level of detail regarding interior mirrors as the LRU is the complete mirror that rotates into place on the windshield mount button. Further research on the E46 mirrors shows that there is a manual-dimming version of the mirror that has the rain sensor and 315Mhz receiver for the key fob. Convertibles pack all those electronics in the base of the mirror.

Thanks for replying.

Heh. I too don't mind the cupholders. Ironically (or not), the BMW branded coffee mug fits perfectly. Doesn't budge at all.

sorry to hijack your conversation, but
there is basic mirror for e90, with manual autodim, it is installed on e9x with basic options, and seems not shipped to US
i've upgraded mirror to FLA version on my friends car and can send you dissassembled basic mirror, it will have alarm led tough

Thanks for the offer. I've researched enough that I think the E46 base manual-dimming mirror will work. I'm ordering one this week.

I haven't been on E90Post for almost 1 year due to my new business. Came back tonight and first thing I see is this post. Almost gave me a heart attack lol. Glad it was just the cup holder. Waiting for your E90 to hit 500,000....I remember when you were at 335,000.

Ina ll those miles... how many times, or how often, do you use the cupholder?
Do you leave in out, or push it in/out each time you use it?

I ask those as 'serious' questions, as we all know these things are cheaply make... so if you used it heavy for all those miles and years, and it's just now breaking, I am actually very impressed.

I rarely, if ever, use mine... but I am still waiting for the day I go to open it up and it breaks or pops out.

I'd say I've been using it lately on a daily basis for the past 2 years or so. I used it occasionally before then, but always used a 10, or 12 ounce drink tumbler. It lost the spring that pushes it out. It had recently in the past few months, vibrating when open, whether occupied with a drink or not. Looking back, it is obvious now the mechanism was stating it's objection to being used.

The replacement mechanism is $60. Hardly worth trading in the car for a new G20

I mean, i agree, they are "fine"...
Cool concept and people tend to want to play with them, but they are not built for longevity.
Just the way they are design, it takes a quick knee or elbow and you can snap them right off.

I rarely use mine, but not because I fear I will break them, i just dont really drink beverages in my car or have a need, as ridiculous as that may sound.

Mine has been sticking for a year or two. I have become quite efficient at giving the dash the right palm strike to get it to open enough for me to pull it out.

20 oz Starbucks tumbler is perfect fit in the cupholder. Once put in there, that cup is not moving unless you take it out. Another item that fits perfectly into the cupholder is red bull 8.4 oz can.

Please get to 400K. My wife has a 2011 328i with 130k.(bought it with 40k) We're trying to get to 200,000 at a minimum and the car has treated us great and she wants to hold onto the car forever.

I've got a 2013 535i as my daily thats treating me well too. I preform the maintenance on both vehicles myself with everything I've mostly learned from these forums.

LOL. 390,700 as of parking it on Wednesday. Runs better every day.

Thanks for asking

Really crazy... About a month ago I didn't drive it for about 5 days. A bird made a nest in the right side cowling water drain well. Scared the shit out of me. I opened the hood to check for mice and this bird flew out. Went over to the drain and found its nest with 3 eggs in it.
