Wheel powdercoating question....normal for clearcoat to be built in?

I am looking at getting a set of wheels powdercoated gloss black (which I've done many time).

I was always under the impression they powdercoated them black and then applied a clearcoat.

This place I'm looking at having do it this time (who is really reputable) says their gloss black comes with a built-in clear coat and an additional clearcoat on top will slightly dull the overall glossiness.

I guess I don't think I've heard of a gloss black having a clearcoat "built in".....

I think what the powder coater is trying to convey is that powder coat achieves the same benefits as a clear coat: durability, hardness, and gloss. I would not have clear coat applied over powder coat. Without significant prep it will be difficult to get a solid bond between powder coat and clear coat. Any damage to the clear coat will open up a path for water/salt to infiltrate between the layers.

powder goes on, and dries wet by itself.. no need for anything extra.. Take your car elsewhere lol

Ah ok….so most powdercoats don't actually get a clear?

It was the office lady who said this….I have a feeling she just didn't explain it right. They work on lots of Ferraris and Lambos and have rave reviews…so I doubt they are doing anything abnormal.

My normal place is one where I have to take the wheels to them off the car and I don't want to do that this time. I want a place that will remove, powdercoat, remount and balance….it's a lot easier.

Ya you can't always trust the front desk ladies. I had one a few years ago from a tint place argue with me over there being ceramic in tint. Needless to say I took my business elsewhere.
