Angry Dreaded Drivetrain malfunction Real Bad!

Good morning
I rarely post as my 2018 base F90 has been trouble free until now. I use the beast as my daily driver and made it to work with no problems. (About 40 miles each way at 55+mph) However on startup I got the "drivetrain malfunction /vehicle can be driven/contact service" message. The car was running HORRIBLE!
Driving down the road you immediately feel and hear the sputtering, rough running and significantly reduced power(couldn't overtake a 98 Camry at 40 mph). The smell of raw and partially burnt fuel in the cabin was unbearable. Bad pops and bangs, I can literally see the fuel level dropping-what happened to my baby??
Limped her home and I noticed the tail pipes on the left side are spewing smoke whereas the right side seem to be exhausting normal which leads me to believe the issue is on the cylinders #5-8 side but who knows. No obvious oil or coolant leaks under the hood either. I Hooked up my simple OBD code reader and only got the following:

-Charging Pressure Control: Switch-off As Consequence-P1260

Just under 20K miles on the clock-to the dealer she goes
Stay tuned

Cracked plastic charge pipes? Theyre plastic and my friend had that issue on his F80 and he saw the same results.

Hey Brava no ECU tune she's still virgin under the hood.
Cam that's interesting. A cracked pipe would present all those symptoms? I'll talk to my SA

You have bad engine coils and or spark plugs. Same thing happened to my wifes X5 (has the twin turbo 4.4 liter motor) got same message and check engine light at 35,000 miles.

A basic scan tool will confirm fault codes. In our case it was cylinder 6 but replaced all of them at a cost of $1700 for all 8 coils and 8 new spark plugs.

Way different engine design. M5 doesn't suffer from the same issue with charge pipes, as does the F80

I just had the sparkplugs changed on my M5 under the last free maintenance this past August, my M5 only had 9.5k and I was surprised they changed them out. I asked the service advisor how much would I be looking at if the spark plug were not covered under the free maintenance, he told me around $800.

Moving forward I will more then likely keep my M5 (2018) for the foreseeable future. I started pricing out coils and sparkplugs and I will do the maintenance myself. Two different web sites for the same parts come in at $434.24 (coils and plugs) and $632.80 (coils and plugs).

My wife's 2012 VW GTI that she can not separate with had 2 of the 4 ignition coils fail as just over 39k miles. I now carry a complete set of coils in the rear hatch area and instructed her how they are changed out if I am not around the area. Unlike the M5 the GTI's are easy to access at the top portion of the engine.

I had this on my F90 after a pinhole size coolant bottle leak. (The seam around the bottle failed and the bottle had to be replaced.)

Some coolant went over the coils causing them to rust.

New set of coils, injectors and plugs under warranty and problem sorted.

Why injectors? Those are not cheap. LOL.

Because my service advisor is da man!

No seriously though, he did not want to take any chances and BMW authorised the injectors as part of the repair so he changed them anyway.
He said in his (and the techs) opinion only two injectors actually needed to be changed but because they had all been authorised he did the whole lot.

Even with the coils, it was only the side of the engine closest to the coolant bottle that needed to be changed but they did the whole lot anyway.

That sounds like it could be more than coils and plugs, but not sure what…

Anyways, let us know how it goes with the dealer!

I appreciate the responses. Actually passed on to my SA. It's day 4 and though they confirm the misfiring, they have not identified the root cause as yet. I'll update again.

I had a DTML Wednesday and had a plug and injector replaced under warranty.

I got the car back today and no issues at all … felt great on several spirited runs just now on the way home.

See work order ..

If dealer had car for 4 days and they cant figure out problem they don’t know what they are doing. I would look to another shop.

Harsh.....perhaps not. At least this engine is now in it's 5 model year and the tech's by now have experience with it. Imagine the first spark plug change my dealer did on an M5. Yes mine. Took him 12 hours. So at least the dealer has the proper computer gear and parts supply to get it sorted out. Just need a tech who cares....I suspect it will take them two weeks to figure out my car's problem.

Hey Keith I hear you but to be fair- I was a drop in without an appointment during a busy holiday week and they have been good with servicing of other vehicles. Like Aronis said, they have the proper equipment and I'm not looking for a quick fix. When it's repaired I need to know details and what troubleshooting was done and not just throw parts at it.

Hey 70-were the symptoms as bad as I described? Did the dealer say what caused the failure in the parts at all? Thanks
