Driver Safety System Malfunction.

Oh Boy...sure hope the BMW diagnostic system points to an easy fix. I hate the idea of a tech trying part a then part b then part c for 3 months.

The red M keys don't work and the heated steering wheel button does not work. All the other steering wheel buttons work, power adjustment works, headlight high beam, information system cycle button, etc.

I think the steering wheel module is likely the key component.

So what group of modules failed here?

It could be the clock spring. It can be fixed but easier to replace.

Take the airbag off and check the connections from the wheel to the clock spring. There’s two connectors. The one at the top is the main one. Also the connector inside the wheel from the left hand switch pack is worth checking. If it’s loose or damaged this will cause the Driver Assistance DTCs.

Holy shit I thought he was KIDDING ME!!! I'm taking the car to my Porsche Mechanic and he is going to scan with his system. We will consider that very thing.

What connections are in that Spring? All the steering wheel buttons work and the horn works, but the heated steering wheel button and the two M switches do not.

We shall see...

Do you have any images of this??

On to YouTube!

Oh boy is right! A lot of detail in the PDF for the steering wheel. Probably not difficult if you've done it before, but the first time you have to be careful. Good luck!

I have taken apart similar items, but its great to have a proper diagram to give you the lay of the land.

Going to scan with proper equipment tomorrow. Then come up with a plan. I have an appointment at the BMW in January. Rather DIY than have someone poking around who has not fixed this particular issue before. Guys in Albany who rebuilt the car have the experience ripping it down. Not sure if Gault has done similar tear downs as they are lower volume dealership.

It...was.......soup.....poisoning......

It was a fuse. They said there was corrosion on fuses due to water. WTF? Not covered by warrantee. $400. Because the car had been repaired. So not covered by BMW warrantee....water intrusion.... At least it all works again.

The (*&)&*) unplugged the wires to my dash cam though.....arrrggghhhh

Yes module for the dash cam was inadvertently unplugged. Easy fix. LOL. I did not see any evidence that anything had ever been wet. Oh well.
