I know petrol is more enjoyable but when you consider how new electric cars are these latest ones from Porsche and Audi are super impressive and point to a seriously bright future and as battery technology improves weight will drop, range will increase considerably and charging times will reduce to the point that it won’t be the concern it currently is.
I’ve got another two and a half years with my M5 Comp but I reckon by then I will be taking a seriously long hard look at electric. |

Infrastructure is the biggest issue with electric cars, petrol has been around for well over a hundred years and it’s infrastructure has built to the point petrol stations are everywhere, until electric changing point are similarly as accessible and charging times remain beyond 10-15 minutes for a full charge it will remain a concern for most wanting to choice it as a replacement rather than an addition. The M5CS will definitely hold better value regardless where you are but it’s not Ferrari or GT3RS, it’s residuals won’t be bulletproof to that level. |

I test drove, alone, no salesman along for the ride, the Taycan 4S. The instant acceleration, as anyone who owns or has driven an E car knows, is pretty incredible. Other than that, I was not that impressed.

I drove a Model 3 Performance. I thought it was pretty good. The tire noise provides road noise. The steering feel was way better than I expected — many cars have electric steering now. The performance was great — incredible immediate pull from the massive torque though it tapers off. I’d be happy with one but when it came time to buy, I bought the F90.

I never intended to buy an electric car right now. The Model 3 would not have had the performance or range I wanted. The Model S probably would be OK for performance though I am not sure it has the top end pull I want (my F90 M5 is modded). It would probably be OK for range but would occasionally be more hassle than I want on trips. I was just noting that a performance electric car can be pretty good and that I could be happy with one. It’s just not my preference at present for the money — I spent $80k on my CPO 18 M5.

Looked at the E-tron but range is awful. I need a car for work and travelling to clients and can't be having range anxiety, as much as the Audi looks the nuts!

To me the Etron is the best looking EV to date - even better than the Taycan. If I had to switch to an EV today, that would be it.
However, it should not be compared to the M5. Speed is not all there is to a car. The M5 will deliver a much better experience than the Etron - plus it's one of the last high powered combustion engines on the market so the value should stay up there compared to the everchanging EV market. |

The innovation curve is so much steeper with electric right now. For example between the Current ICE cars and the next model you get new front lamp shapes and interior design and maybe a bit more tech, the fundamentals don't really change that much. This means someone is happy to buy your M3/M5 after 3-4 years for half the price you did. With electric cars, the next model 3-4 years after yours will have twice the range, twice the power, half the weight etc. Maybe not that drastic but not far off based on the pace of innovation and investment in that space. So that car becomes like a selling an older PC, you have to find someone that wants to buy into a seriously inferior product at that moment when you are ready to upgrade.

Actually, they will become more desirable as they are phased out. Most car enthusiast who prefer sound over speed will pay more for an ICE. Just look at how much some E46/E39 examples in good shape sell for. The want for ICE will grow exponentially when they are mostly off the market.

I agree, the most iconic ICE cars will become like vintage mechanical watches for long term holders. The comparison for electric cars is like a new digital watch. It has more functions, is more accurate and more reliable but they sure wont appreciate.

Right - a good comparison is cell phone technology. You add a few features and enable things remotely via software update and everyone jumps ship. Where there is no "soul" involved, people will switch out cars like they switch out cell phones because it's just a commodity.

I'm tired talking about electric appliances vs ICE cars. Yes, they are fast in a straight line, but that's about it. There's nothing fun about these AC/DC cars.
They do have their own issues. This includes environmental problems. Dr. Emmit's car was more environmentally friendly then electric toasters being made today. |
