I think as well that our windshields are too thin. I think they do this to shave a few pounds.

I just had my windshield replaced. My insurance company says I now need to take it to the dealer to have car recalibrated but glass company says it is all set. Everything seems to be working fine but wanted to double check with some of you that have replaced an F90 windshield.

Make sure the part # for the OEM windshield is 51-31-7-388-745 (that's the one for HUD equipped cars). Also, make sure they use the OEM upper molding (part #51-31-7-388-713). I just replaced my windshield about a month ago and while they used OEM glass, they used some generic molding roll didn't sit flush against the edge of the roof (with resulting gaps). I had them replace the glass again using the OEM molding and all is well now.

Good luck.

So they came to my house and replaced the windshield with all bmw parts yesterday. Took 2 guys 45 mins. All items were new and they did a great job. Seems like nothing needs to be calibrated. Only thing I see is the HUD seems like it might need to be adjusted just a little bit other than that much easier than the dealer.

Btw with all bmw parts it cost my insurance company $1539 with labor compared to over $3k my bmw dealer quoted me to do the work.

Glad it worked out well!

I’m in NY I have full gall coverage. Zero deductible.

I called them and requested OEM glass. They approved and the dealer installed it and re register the sensors and hud.

My wife's X3 had a rock chip, and it was a major learning experience.

1. Is it a lease? If so, then you must use BMW glass (even though it costs many times the no-name brand. If not, then I don't think you want BMW glass.
2. Our insurance would only cover the no-name brand, so I had to pay the difference. Even though the lease required BMW glass.
3. Safelite is much cheaper than going to the dealership, and they can get BMW glass if you order it. However, I don't think the quality of the work is as high as at the BMW dealership. It's fine for my wife's X3, but I wouldn't want it for my M.
4. If it does go though insurance, then it may be possible for them to raise your rates because of the claim. I forgot the details, but I think it may depend on your state and insurance company.
5. A few months after I filed the claim (and paid the extra for the BMW glass), they called me and said that there had been a mixup and they actually do cover BMW glass in this case. I received the check a few days later. But the explanation did not make any sense. Maybe it was because I had to call up like 6 times screaming at them to find out why my lease requires BMW glass and they don't pay for it. (The reason is that this a hole in the insurance. They do not repair the car to what is required by the lease. They only repair the car to make it drivable, not using BMW parts. I guess that's how insurance works.)

The F90 windscreen is certainly weak. Has to change mine after 15k miles. Same thing happened as OP.
The last car I had to change windscreen was on my 330d but it had 130k miles at the time

I got it replaced and less than 1 month later, another crack from the top, passenger side, exactly like your photo.

I didn’t get any rock either for both of them.

For both occurrences, it happened while I was doing HPDE at the track, in between sessions.

What I find somewhat strange is that there is absolutely no protection at the very top of the windshield, like a small rubber strip to protect that very sharp edge.
Same thing here!

I was driving down the road and hit a frost bump in our shitty roads, I heard a crack noise, no one in front of me, no rock chip. When I got home, the windshield was cracked dead centre down the middle.

It took it to the dealer, at first the service people at the front wouldn’t do much. It took some talking to get someone out of their office to actually look at it and feel it… no chip nothing, completely smooth. She said ya and put it through, BMW warranty covered it.

I think there is a flaw in the top of the windshield in how it’s made or weak point, perhaps some flex in the body. I had the suspension in sport plus mode at the time, so it was riding firm. One thing I did notice was a ridge on either side of the crack on the very top of the glass, could be a manufacturing imperfection which causes a weak point.

Glad that BMW warranty covered it. These suckers are expensive.

The dealership estimate was about $3k insurance just wants to give me $1700 for it, not sure which route should I go with.

I've been leasing BMWs for over 20 years and can say that I've only requested BMW OEM glass once. Living in AZ I replace a windshield about once a year.

Not a single time has BMW ever given me a hard time about turning in a car at lease end with non OEM glass. Honestly, they look for cracks and chips and that's all.

i got a chip about 6 months ago from a truck on an on ramp. chip is unsightly but you can't feel it from the inside or much from the outside. Not much to be done and i dont want to replace because i dont want to take the time to schedule and have it retinted which took 3 tries for them to get it right without distortions. I am on lease and may just wait to claim until the very end. Don't want to turn in a lease with a tinted windshield anyway.

I took a rock yesterday at the bottom of the windshield just below the dash line. It's a big one. It's awesome because my new car got to port yesterday and I'm trading this car in. Should I let them ding me on trade in value or fix it? My comprehensive policy "should" cover it. $500 deductible.

We are lucky here. SC has $0 glass deductible. Insurance is required to cover all glass, no questions.

You guys up north definitely have a disadvantage with winter weather and salt/gravel, heavy traffic plus poor overall road quality.

I just had to replace my windshield because the ceramic tint would not peel off and it would not pass inspection. Insurance wouldn't cover so I paid $2300 for a new OEM out of pocket in Dallas.

I'm on the third windshield already. Not happy how thin / weak the windshields are, but the BMW OEM is the only windshield provider available for the M5.

For those of you who have replaced windshields how is the insurance work or should I just eat it and pay the $3k for a new bmw windshield. I have the HUD.
Mine cracked just like that whist in the Garage!!!
No chips just cracked, they are so thin.
