Hyda Performance

Has anybody used this tuner for the F90 platform?

I'm debating using them for a custom map?

I just bought JB4 and they are suggesting that the full ECU tune will be better and JB4 is dangerous (although they are willing to pair it with their ECU)

you mean Hydra.

As far as i know they are new to the tuning game, especially on german vehicles. All i see them doing is mostly american stuff.... so that should answer your question.

I said it once, I'll say it again--slow down.

Whatever it is you are trying to achieve doesn't happen overnight. If you want to get to a certain performance point, spend the necessary time with reputable companies. I've never even heard of these guys. DME have tons of accolades and technically they own the tune for the fastest M5 in the world... and yet you decide to move on in what, 3 days... to achieve what?

To be honest, the way you use the JB4, I agree with them--it is dangerous because you won't spend any time iterating and learning. The value in doing so is this: quite a few years back, I spent perhaps 6-weeks tweaking and logging and learning what I was reading and tweaking some more and then adding a bit of octane booster and iterating all the while bouncing it off of the vendor, awaiting their response and learning from that, too. As a result, I now have a sedan with a $900 tune box (nothing else) running 10.3s in the 1/4 mile on farm roads as my daily driver. You could, too, but I won't help if you won't spend the time.

Tuning is about patience, iteration and finesse... your approach is 'bull in a china shop' or perhaps I should say 'shops'.

I hope you don't blow something up but, seriously, I won't be too surprised if you do.

You are more patient than I.

I don't have the time nor the desire to "finesse" my tune a million times for a bargain price. I simply want a reliable tune that consistently puts down good numbers and is fine tuned by someone else. After all, I don't "tune." I manage money. I'll stick to what I'm good at and let the tuners finesse the tune..

interested ?

I do appreciate your feedback, however.

I've switched back to Map 1 on JB4 and will await my DME. The guys there are helpful and I trust them.

Ja
That's a reasonable approach.

The cost of the tune wasn't my point, though, not at all--I have very different reasons for using the JB4. That aside, my point was that regardless of the tune or its expense, you'll only achieve *your* car's best through iteration but, as you've just said, you don't have the time. So if it's off-the-shelf you want, then go with a pump-gas DME tune or JB4 map 1 and you're there.

Consistent 0-60mph runs are a combo of the above, experience, tires, DA/temp and the right road... I reference 0-60s because you seem to use that as your yardstick of success.

Given I'm using a JB4 with nothing else and running sub-2.6s, it's obviously achievable with that device. DME stage 1 should be able to compete (I hope).

Me too ..

I agree with you btw

Also, I don't necessarily think the 0-60 time is the beat yardstick (I just don't have a lot of open road to test the 60-130s) or quartet miles

I can do 0-60s at a stop light and not risk being pulled in the city

I think we all agree that these cars stocks should easily do 3.1 sec 0-60... yes driving conditions matter , but the stock comp should probably be able to do that on a pretty consistent basis ...

I think we would also further agree that the JB4 map 1 on pump gas should have taken that time sub 3 second (with no tinkering) .. likely in the consistent 2.8 range

What I was frustrated with is that I was not putting down those times ... it's not my driving (because LC is easy .. brake.. gas .. go) .. yes conditions matter .. but I was barely breaking 3 seconds and most of my runs were in the 3.1-3.3 range with the ECU tune ..

That's why I felt like something was wrong (either installed wrong or something wrong with the car from factory)

Btw.. the main reason I went to hydra was to see if they would have installed the JB4 for me and tinker with the settings themselves .. I didn't want to do it

That's when they suggested "it's shit .. get hydra" ... hence this post

In any event, I decided "f" that and I just went home and installed the Jb4 but was disappointed when I could only post a 3.1 ...I did 5 launches and none broke 3... it was smile 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 .. ugh !!

That just got my frustrated and worried that I installed wrong or something was wrong w car

I don't know how to read the maps or know what they even tell me (although I want to learn, eventually)

Did you do the base installation with two Tmaps and one OBD2 ? Or did you also install the wastegate controllers ?

I would worry about the install also.

Keep in mind that a 0-60 a light is the worst place. Oil gathers where cars stop and the road is slippery, not to mention the paint on the road will cause slip as well. Also, I don't remember what tires you got with your car. But the Michelin tires seem to work much better.

Omar@hydra is not new. Here had the world record on n54 year's ago and I actually run custom turbos for my 335i from him. He is not reckless with power levels and v actually Is conservative with how he rates components and pushes things.
