People buy the heinous 3 and 5 series GT. . . No reason there wouldn't be a market. The X1 sells well, thats a wagon. . .

I'm a firm beliiever its just like cell phones. "There is no market" for smaller screens and fast wagons, because there are no products for sale. If you build it, I will come (all over the place).

That green one looks sooooo damn good!

Also the back end of the G31/F91 looks so much better than that Merc. Much better proportions, and not so top heavy.

The SUV sells better argument is a slightly twisted one.

Most people in the U.K. live in urban areas and whilst the roads are a bit crap at times there is no need for 4x4 or SUV cars... yet the Chelsea tractor is now everywhere because it became cool.

Estates can throw off the boring image by making them exciting. The reason I don't want an SUV is because it's 500kg heavier than it needs to be.

PS M3 tourer was mentioned by Meel?!

I'm sincerely considering that Merc wagon. Unfortunately due to my timing needs of April next year I might be moving off the Bimmer band wagon either way - the E63 AMG S sedan is a beast too, and now that I'm financing instead of leasing BMW loses a little bit of its "pros" column.

Both the current X3 at seven years old and the latest X1 outsell the Touring by a considerable number with Touring numbers decreasing year by year. Even the maligned 3er Gran Turismo outsells the 3er Touring in the US.

And here is why.

Frank van Meel: This decision is and remains true. We have always said that we do not make an M from every car because we do not want to overwhelm ourselves or the market with too many models. There must therefore always also be a segment which is sufficiently large. And this is simply not the case with an M3 Touring. The car would be a pure Europe car because there is no market for such cars in America, Asia or the Arab world. And in Europe, too, we see that the market for high-performance combos in this segment is shrinking. I know there would be some customers, but there are just not enough. So we continue to focus on sedans, coupees and convertibles
.
Bring a 4-door A3 or CLA competitor
The amount of A3 sedans seen on the road nowadays is insane

BMW had only sold 1056 of the E61 M5 Touring world wide. That's the reason why there is no F10 M5 Touring and likely no F90 M5 Touring.

They had built a bad ass wagon, problem is nobody came, well, not enough anyways.

The reason the 3er GT outsells the touring is because BMW way upcharges the wagon compared to the rest of the 3ers, including the GT, and for no appreciable reason. If it wasn't a few thousand dollar bump, they might have sold more.

As to market and demand, I guess its just sad BMW can't make an high performance M wagon, because the boys in stuttgart have no problems doing it...

I guess those of us niche guys will just have to choose between one of these if we want a bespoke touring model:

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

AMG E63 S Wagon
