Reconfirmed: No More Manuals on Future BMW M5 and M6
BIMMERPOST NEWS Reconfirmed: No More Manuals on Future BMW M5 and M6 A few years back, we reported that the current M5 and M6 will be the last to be offered with a manual transmission. At the time, it was ex-BMW engineering chief, Albert Biermann, who said that the reason was low take rates (around 15% in 2012) of the manual option. Unfortunately, those figures never improved. Our friend Jens Meiners at Road & Track now quotes BMW M GmbH chief Frank van Meel as saying that "demand had dropped to zero." As a result, beginning with the upcoming F90 M5, only DCT will be available. That's the bad news. The good news is that manual transmission will continue to be offered on the M2, M3 and M4, confirms van Meel. |

Garbage! BMW is the last car company to offer a proper gearbox for a full size sedan and/ or coupe!

Although as much as I love the manual in my F30 it's a really not by shift which, in a $60k car I would at least like the gear box to go in and out of fear smoother.

I would like to be upset but since BMW has moved its model line upward the next 5 series will be so close to the outgoing 7 series ... to me this makes perfect sense.
Keep a manual in the next M3 however, as it it going to be what the M5 used to be. |

It does say the demand for them is 0%.

I understand why they are getting rid of it, but it would be cool if they kept it around.
Also, I remember reading in the M5 forums that there was a 6MT owner who was not happy with the tranny, as it felt like it was not intended for the car. This same owner test drove a DCT and validated his "theory". Although that was the opinion of only one person it definitely intrigued me while reading it. Would you rather have a flawless DCT or a sluggish 6MT? Based off the story above. Personally, I would choose DCT on an M5, but I will be choosing 6MT for my upcoming F80 build. |

Woah WOAH, BMW. The ultimate driving machine requires the driver to drive. Keep the manual option for those who still want to be involved in the driving experience.

No just one owner. One of the auto magazines tested the manual version and said you can feel a noticeable turbo lag, but almost none in DCT version. |

I mean I'm a die hard manual fan, but a manual on the M5/6 doesn't make much sense. They're meant to be luxury sports cars. They're heavy, bulky machines, and while their performance is still top notch, I believe they're meant for the more luxury/comfort-but-still-wanna-go-fast crowd. Unlike the M2/3/4 crowds, who are much more sport oriented.
Personally, I got my M6GC in DCT. I would never have gotten it in manual.

Who's surprised? Just doesn't make sense for a car like this. Regardless of what model is used, as long as BMW has a relatively small car that's not hopped up on power and torque, there will always be a MT until there's absolutely no demand for it.

why is it that here in America we are lazy as hell. you go to other parts of the world and manuals dominate the roads. only here is automatic the standard. I think if more manuals were on the roads here there would be less accidents. manual forces you to pay attention to the road more and put the damn phones down.

That was a self-fulfilling prophecy imo. I owned a MT F10 M5 - for 14 months. BMW had said that the M5 and M6 were engineered for a DCT, and that the MT was offered only for the (foolish) Americans. And I should have known better than to fight with the Germans. imo, the M5 with the MT was a complete dog. I had other issues with the car (weight, size, weight), but the engine/transmission combo was the biggest reason that I got rid of the car so quickly. So the Germans made sure that demand for it dropped to zero.
