My M5 v GTR
So I'm not exactly one for tracking or racing, but going up to pick my mother, I happened upon a GTR in front of me going up the A1 to Scotland.
It's a bugger of a road, sometimes single track, sometimes dual carriageway and you can get stuck in queues of traffic waiting for the next bit of dual carriageway. So that happened here, stuck for a while in queue with the GTR just in front and when the dual carriageway opened up, the GTR was keen to show who was boss! Now my M5 isn't properly tuned, but it does have a DTUK (racing chip equivalent) and the GTR got a bit of a surprise as I reeled him in at a rolling start of 45mph and could have easily passed him if there has been road. I was quite shocked how much mid range power my M5 had, it really took off. I was also on winter tyres and admittedly it's was damp outside so this may have benefited me, the GTR was a few years old as well (looked about 3/4 years) so it may not be a rapid as newer models. But still, quite chuffed how well the M5 stood up to it! Not quite Hamilton v Verstappen but it was fun and the GTR driver was a gent as well giving the good thumbs up and waving before turning off a little later. |

Full tune? With engine internals? The GT-R can get CRAZY powerful. But brakes and chassis? Not quite the F90 composure or brake performance (no cooling on the GT-R's brakes, at all). To OP, enjoy. GT-R to M5 is close on most platforms stock. You have the comfier ride, and MUCH MUCH safer. Cool post. Shawn |

I had a street encounter with a GTR in 2009 while in my 1999 E36 M3 with supercharger. We were even to 155 mph when one of my pistons broke due to detonation from insufficient fuel. The exhaust put out quite a smoky oil fog.

I swapped in another motor and made sure it had enough fuel. A year later, I removed the supercharger, dropped compression a little more with a thicker headgasket and installed a turbocharger. About 5 years after that, I built a low compression shortblock and swapped that in. Still driving it occasionally.

Ahhh, the James Bond approach with the smoke screen! Nice.

GTR is an amazing Jap sports car but is also the most overpriced car I can think of. I used to want one(I still love them) until they started jacking the price WAY up. I know all about them. I know the engine is hand built and signed and all that jazz but it's still a 6 cyl Nissan and to my knowledge is not even available with ccb rotors. It costs about the same as a new M5 and has nowhere near the features or power(unless you opt for track ed which is insanely expensive). IMO they have no business charging over a hundred grand for this car, but people still buy them I guess so they will continue!

1000 rwhp with RWD in NH isn’t that much fun. Even assuming stand-alone with traction control and drag radials, full performance is when filled with race gas or E85 (and there isn’t any E85 in NH), dry pavement and warm weather.

They also tune and build a bunch of Lambos, R8/10's, Porsches, Ferrari, etc... even saw a Bugatti one day. They are a legit go fast shop. All i'm saying is from a highway roll vs one of those 1000+ (they're over 2000 HP now) Supras would be stupid.....and hilarious at the same time. Last edited by HerkHealer; 01-15-2022 at 07:10 PM.. |

With that kind of power they can spin at the start of the highway roll. They are probably in the low 4 seconds 60-130 mph. I used to run my turbo E36 M3 at Epping, but they are really strict about NHRA rules in terms of safety equipment so was becoming more involved than I was interested in. I heard a rumor NED might sell to Amazon. That would be too bad since there are no other strips in NH. I have a couple of turbo E36 M3 friends who still run there and I go out to watch sometimes. I have been towed out of there a few times — broken diff output stubs, broken driveshafts, broken trans, fused clutches. Happy memories. I like watching the guys from MA come up with totally built and gutted Hondas running 30 psi boost and trapping around 150 mph.

Once I get the full Dinan exhaust and tune on my 2020 M550, you can show me how to launch it Summer 2022. And boooo to the Amazons buying our track! |
