The new M3/M4 xdrive fit the bill and are super easy to mod. I do wonder why the v8 internals are made of glass when the IL6s aren’t. I almost bought an RS6 (2018) as those engines are bulletproof. But the M550i was a bargain so I got it instead.

When I bought my M5 earlier this year the AWD M3 was not yet available so it was not an option. I also wanted a bigger car than the E90 M3 that I had and am not sure the new M3 would have suited me. But yes, tuners have done well with the S55 and S58. The S63TU4 is good but you have to respect the limits. I think they mod well within those limits — on 93 plus meth or an E blend and only a secondary cat delete you can have a mid size 4 door AWD luxury sports sedan than runs very low 10s at 135 mph.

I am sure tuners will get the AWD M3 there, but it weighs only 10% less so the S58 will be asked to work harder than in the RWD cars and harder than the S55 before it.

RS6 seems unimpressive performance wise — maybe it is too heavy. I did look briefly at the AMG E63. Also looked briefly at the Panamerica Turbo, but it was also heavier and had worse straight line performance.

i wouldn't be looking for late model AWD sedan. Period. You guys are wanting too much out of the M5, thats the real problem..

The f10, and f90 were and are great cars out of the box for a sedan. But everyone wants 800hp and to be able to beat on it every weekend. Not going to happen. You want something with that much power, thats going to hold, buy a different car.

In terms of where BMW did short change the M550i a little, is using the same wheels and tyres as other 5 series models with much less power and torque: 8" and 9" wheels with midrange runflats front to back does seem a little stingy. This spring I will be swapping over to some forged 9" and 10" wheels with wider UHP tyres. Should close the gap on the 0-60 times without the need for any extra power.

For those of us that need a late model mid size AWD luxury sports sedan, that is what we look for.

I actually LOVE the 20" 668 wheels on mine. I do hate the runflats though. I have a set of brand new PS4S tires going on in Spring.

But...... my favorite part of the M550 is how stealthy it is. Fantastic sleeper car. Recently a Dodge ScatPack tried flexing on me. It did not end well for him.

I will keep the 668m wheels for winters. Continental Sportcontact 7's are going on the forged rims. I expect to remove 15lbs from each wheel without too much difficulty.

M5 vs M550 debate and after test driving both I think the M5 is superior. Yes you can tune both and blah blah but once you get in the M5 and put it in gear there is no comparison.

What year M550 did you drive ? This is for the 2020's and up that have 523HP and 553 Torque (same as M5).

Stock, there is a big difference in performance between the two cars, despite being rated at the same torque. The M5 ratings are known to be low so maybe the M550i ratings are simply accurate, making the difference greater.

Someone dyno'd their stock 2017 M550 and it came out at 530 Torque, whereas BMW claimed 479. So it happens in the M550 also it seems.

Anyway, this is getting Off Topic now, because the original post was how a 2020+ Tuned M550 would compare against a Stock M5.

All the goods have arrived apart from TPMS valves. Fingers crossed I can get the rolling stock mounted next week and see what proper tyres can do.

I read that article as well and still thought the M550i was slow at 119 in the quarter compared to 127 or more for the M5. Same torque rating at M5, but 68 hp less and another hundred lbs weight. I would think the M550i should be 5mph down not 8 or more mph down.

This is something that I plan to investigate. Having my car weighed while getting the geo setup in a few weeks time. The real world weight of an M550i really seems to vary a lot so I'm keen to get data. It appears that If you are willing to forgo softclose doors, sunroof, rear wheel steer, hydraulic roll bars and the comfort seats etc. You can get it down to as low as 1820kg. That's M5 CS mass! I'm not too keen on arguing about dynos but I did see the Racechip guys videos with their before and after figures. M550i does what it says on the tin with 530ps and the base M5 was 660 on the same equipment. Comp pack typically adds 20 on top so make of that what you will.

2018 M550i here (so, pre TU3 with the upgrade in HP and torque), so this may not be directly applicable.

Stage 2 E50
xHP (currently Stage 3 with some options ticked)
Downpipes
97506’s
Still have the shitty Pirelli RFTs (almost ready to be swapped, going PS4S) which are KILLING my 60ft (especially going to E50, my Stage 2 E30 60ft's were 1.69 to 1.72)
No proper prep track runs. Only Dragy.

Also included a 'stock' dyno I had done, although take the results with a LARGE grain of salt (stock as in before I'd done any modifications to the car).

I haven’t done runs in about 3 months, and the ambients when I did them were mid 60’s.

Ah hell, I’ll show ya (posting mobile, so I’ll edit the post in a minute).

In short, the car easily has sub 3s/sub 11s times as it sits now. Is it an M5? Absolutely not, and I was very, VERY close to buying a 2019 M5C today, but decided to wait (and yes, I'd tune the ever-loving shit outta that, too), but this car shouldn't be downplayed. G30 is no question not an F90, but if you're willing to spend about $3k in minor things, it definitely gets closer.

Final note: Jordan did my E50 tune (from RKtunes in the first vid).

Update: Had my camber arms and sway bars fitted with geo setup yesterday. I asked them to put the car on the corner scales while it was there.

So for comparison:

(CarAndDriver real world scales is the source of data for the M5 variants)

2021 M5 Comp - 1925 kg
2021 M5 CS - 1861 kg
2021 M550i - 1878 kg

Anyone here have the RKTunes on a TU3 yet? I've got a Dinan midpipe and axle back going on next week, thinking about taking to RK for the wall art and a tune over the summer.
