1200 break-in coming up

Finally reaching my 1200 mile break-in this week. Service scheduled for next weekend. Looking forward to having it done so I can finally open it up.

Ordered in April…picked up mid-August from the dealership. I've been struggling to get to 1200….a lot of useless trips to Starbucks. I'm at 1205 today so I can lay off for the next couple days. How did your service go?

Nice! It went well; didn’t know it is a 2.5 hour job so I guess plan your stay accordingly. Be sure to ask for hand wash if you get the car washed so it doesn’t scratch etc. I am currently at about 1400 miles… lots of spirited driving i95 express lanes and back roads, lol.

I see you have a thing for Alpine whites… nice!

Also, what brand front lip do you have on the car?

Awesome thanks for that - ironically I got a call today to confirm and they said give it about 2-3 hrs. I have the M Performance splitter...but that's because they put it on mistakenly so I actually also have the Sterckenn LCI splitter in the box sitting here in my office that I ordered while the car was shipping over. I was tempted to sell the Sterckenn splitter, but these front lips get messed up eventually so the Sterckenn is now my back-up lol.

Nice, yeah I am ordering the Sterckenn as well… there aren’t really a whole lot of options for the lci lip

Yea I've seen literally a couple besides the Sterckenn...but I don't like them at all. One is made in China and looks extremely bulky and thick for my taste.

So I was originally told just like you were - 2.5-3 hours. It was ultimately done closer to about 2 hours...maybe just shy of that. Diff fluid, oil change, other fluid checks, brake check, system check (in case update was needed) and some other software checks, etc.

The one thing I would caution you is MAKE SURE they set aside all the fluids they need for your service to the side!! There are supply chain issues with diff fluid so they may not have it unless you tell them to put it aside for you (if they haven't already).

Also here are my impressions of my 1200 mile service I posted (I believe in wrong forum)....

'21 M5C LCI - So had my 1200 mile break-in completed successfully. Per the service order there were 4 specific line items completed:

1. Diff fluid replaced front and rear (btw there's a shortage of diff fluid so check to make sure they have it in stock for service)
2. Oil change
3. Other vehicle fluids
4. LC System and engine config check

They also did the typical end to end vehicle inspection- nothing remarkable except inflating tires to 36-37 psi.

Impression…what I expected. My "butt" dyno suggests it's faster on WOT…but it's also the first time I'm actually pushing it WOT since I painstakingly have kept it to sub-4,000 rpm. So there's no baseline comparison.

Response does feel more free-flowing and less tight - again not significantly enough where I can say the service really changed it.

Finally I read posts of the sound being dampened after break-in….definitely NOT the case. This is the one true thing I can say has in fact gotten significantly better post service - deeper, more pops / burbling and it lasts much longer than before even in 3+ gear.

All in all VERY happy with my service, the crew and the dealership.

At my 1200 two weeks ago they only replaced rear diff fluid. Apparently that's the new standard.

I would get that exactly in writing - and not just a service receipt - but someone there in writing telling you that's all they need to do because you don't want BMW coming back at you saying "why didn't you get all these other things done at 1200?" Then you'd have little recourse because it's not what the dealership wants to do...it's what BMW corporate needs you to do. Just my 2 cents to cover your rear.

I know on the 2021 X5MC, along with the engine oil & filter, rear diff fluid only gets changed. I have to believe the same would apply to the M5.

Maybe I misunderstood - I thought the poster said he ONLY had diff fluid changed....if he got the other things you mentioned done as well (e.g. oil, etc.) then I'm sure they are good to go!

Just had my 1200 mile service done yesterday. Got the total BS line from the SA telling me that the break-in service unlocks more power .

Oil change and diff fluid change were performed and car performs and sounds just like it did before the service so at least they didn't screw anything up.

One somewhat funny note is my dealership now takes video during service and they informed me that my car has summer performance tires and aren't designed for snow (really????). They also let me know that my car is blue which I wasn't aware of.

I got my 1200 break-in service performed today on my 2022 M5C and this appears to be correct - it is the new standard changed by BMW. I asked several SAs and only some of them were in the know of the change. One of them called the shop foreman in front of me to verify, and that person’s response for only rear differential service was very definitive.

I checked to compare part numbers between Pre-LCI and LCI, it seems the front transfer case part numbers are different too

Following up on this thread. Yes, in my previous post I meant that instead of changing both front and rear diff fluid, only rear diff fluid was changed in my 1200 mi breakin. (Breakin service was actually performed at 998 miles —SA insisted that was fine. Car was brought in for a wheel+tire swap and soft-close issue originally.)

Engine oil and filter were also replaced, so it was a "normal" 1200mi service for an LCI M5.

Because I couldn't leave it at that, I followed up with Genius about a week or two ago. After a lengthy hold, Genius rep confirmed that all current model year M cars (3,4,5,8) and drivetrains have a 1200 mi service that does not replace front diff fluid.
