Thanks Jose! It's been awhile! Hope all is well with you and the family.

Quick update... Car went in for its scheduled service and a state inspection. While it was in I asked them to check out an issue where the car would die immediately after starting, maybe 5% of the time. I had chalked it up to a bad tank of gas, so I didn't think much of it. They performed some recall work, reprogrammed something, and then it wouldn't start. They filed a claim with BMWNA and recommended a full engine wiring harness replacement which must come from Germany (a 2+ week shipment) and then drop the engine out in order to perform the replacement (1-2 weeks labor). Looks like the car will be a nice Christmas ornament in the service bay for the rest of the year . This was definitely not an expected outcome from the service visit last week, but here we are.

TLDR; Car is out for likely over a month now. Everyone be grateful for what you have and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Wow!

I have a similar issue that happens intermittently as well.

After driving the car for a bit (30 min or more)and then turning it off, it will often die on the restart. The restart is usually 20-30 min after last driving it.

My thinking was that it was Fuel Pump related (High Pressure possibly) .. I could not replicate it for the dealer so that was that.

It happens a couple of times a year so I never looked into it any further and now the car has 8 months left on the lease so I'm not going to bother.

Was this like your issue?

Hope you and the fam are well.

What a drag to have happen! You probably have a good relationship with your dealership, so perhaps this isn't an option. After their work on your car it wouldn't start at all, but before it would die after starting a small % of the time, and then restart without a problem? Is it possible it's something they did and not the wiring harness? I've never done this and of course it might damage your relationship with the service manager, but is a second opinion possible from another service shop? Independent or BMW dealership?

I only make the suggestion because pulling the engine is such a major event, and could lead to other complaints afterwards.

Definitely is a bummer. I have a pretty good relationship with the dealership, and they have a good group of techs that specifically handle the M vehicles that come in. It would be really tough to take elsewhere for another opinion at this point. The opinion/decision came down from BMWNA after they reported the issue with them, so I highly doubt another dealership would get a different answer than to drop the engine to install the replacement wiring harness as they instructed. We shall see.

Thanks for clarifying. With BMWNA making the decision, your dealership must have given them a reliable diagnosis. The harness itself isn’t cheap and the labor on top of that. Hope all goes well. Thank goodness for the warranty!

I haven’t been counting, but with your last posts are you catching josec70 in number of pictures of your car on this forum? They both look great, so always good to see!

Absolutely, it sounds like an expensive repair! This is all the more reason I’d be hesitant to tune a car anymore, especially while in-warranty.
