Wait before shutting off the engine

Do you guys wait a little bit before shutting off the engine after a ride ?

I heard people saying that for the turbos , it was better to wait 30 secondes , other says 2 minutes , and also some say that you don't need to wait at all.

Curious to know how you guys a treating your engines

I personally wait close to 2 minutes.

Only if I’ve been messing around WOT minutes before. I let it run with hood open. If not I turn it off. That’s all of my cars.

I'm not sure if this is serious question or not?

I saw a YouTube video where the fans were running long after the engine was shut off. Would that suffice? Why is it necessary to wait? This may not always be practical IRL.

In my F80 the car will cool itself down, I always heard the fans running after a spirited drive.

The fans in modern turbocharged BMWs will keep running to circulate the oil and cool itself down even after the car is turned off and locked, so I don't think you need to worry about this.

Yes, my car continue to make humming noise even after I shut off the engine and lock the door for 30 secs or so. I assume it's cooling down the turbo.

Exactly.

The days of having to run your turbocharged car at idle before shutdown after spirited driving are over. Those fans and pumps you hear after turning the engine off prevent oil from coking in the turbos.

I’m still running all of my cars for a few minutes after WOT runs. I try to go easy a few miles away from home but sometimes demo runs are necesssry.

Turbo Timers are precisely for this, but for older turbocharged cars.

The fans stay on for quite a while after shutting the car off and and I am sure it also has an electric pump that keeps the coolant circulating after you shut the car off.

Modern turbo's are cooled by water and oil circulation through them and last a long time. I replaced the turbos on my 2003 RS6 at 140,000 miles only because the engine was out and a few of the blades showed wear on the exhaust side of the turbine.

I don't think it is necessary to sit in the car idling the engine to cool down every time you stop. Perhaps after a spirited drive you could do a cool down lap before parking the car?

I did not see anything in the manual about cooling the car down.

I remember in high school auto shop installing turbo timers in a couple of modded imports we used to wrench on... things have (thankfully) changed and you actually don't need to worry about this anymore. So if you like doing it by all means go for it but its really not going to have any effect on your motor.

Probably would be helpful to do a cool down lap after a track session/very spirited drive mainly to give the brakes time to cool down so the rotors don't get warped. Not necessary for most street or even mountain driving though.

There's no need for sake of the turbos. Car has 4 independent electric coolant pumps just for them and will run for up to 30mins after shutdown. If it's really hot, the aux cooling fans will run as well for up to 12 mins.

Thank you for all your replies.

I'm still waiting each time , about 1-2 minutes.
I'm used to it , I was doing so with the X5M during 3 years

I've always heard- but never verified with an authoritative source- that idling for a minute or two before shutting off allows circulating oil to return to the pan and prevent gumming up the valves and other oil lubricated parts.
