Got uncorrected Dyno #s? STD correction inflated my M4 Dyno numbers by about 20%.

Prepare to run out of the thread for being logical in 3-2-1 lol . Correcting a turbo car that is proven to self correct is one of the reasons we see so many inflated dynos in the past 5 years . Great article in Sport Auto a couple years back using a MAHA dyno and a 991 Turbo S . Basically without the incorrect corrections 3 different MAHA dynos showed it was within 5 hp of factory crank claims . They used several other turbo cars as well . The drag strip will not lie, when people are trapping 125-26 mph with "625 whp " maybe they will get it .

The latest version powering the new F90 M5 pushes the limits of the twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 motor yet further promising 600hp and 553lb/ft of torque. The 8-speed transmission paired with the newly adjustable drivetrain ensures the car’s abilities can be adjusted to nearly any driver’s preferences.

Once break in service was completed, we stopped to visit our friends at AMS Performance. Curious to see how accurate BMW’s numbers were on the car while still 100% stock, we hopped on the scales then Dynojet and soon found out.

With the fuel tank approximately 7/8ths full of 93 octane, we weighed in at 4268lbs. BMW’s curb weight estimate at 4370lbs is nearly spot on.

We believe the car was grateful for the chilly weather this morning as we strapped down to the dyno, the AMS staff and ourselves not so much as rain and wind blew in through the open garage door.

Our best run was in 5th gear/AWD/Sport Plus - a surprising 625 whp // 608 lb/ft torque. In all settings power was linear, difference between Sport Plus and Efficient only being about 15hp. We did one run in 6th gear/RWD/Sport Plus and hit the speed limiter at about 152mph/244kph, power maxing out at 593whp // 578 lb/ft torque.

Using these power and weight figures as a benchmark, we’re incredibly excited to move forward with our project and see what the F90 M5 is capable of. Please enjoy our photos and video below.

This number looks too high for my opinion ....
And it’s mean around 685 hp at the engine
Crazy underrating...
There is a DynoJet run by DME tuning they got 569 on rwd and 593 on AWD
Sounds more realistic to me

Why does one sound more realistic than the other ? Each dyno reported what it measured.

660 HP at the crank is "just" 150HP per Liter, which is not at all unrealistic. Bone stock, it probably is already making a bit more than that on a good day with 93 octane fuel.

Just to put things into perspectives here, a stock F90 M5 can out drag a stock GT-R and the new NSX in the 1/4 mile while weighting 300-400lbs more.

Please help the confusion here....Evolve Dyno'd the F90 M5 at 630 crank HP and IND dyno'd at 720HP (625whp and 15% loss) ?

Sounds to me the IND Dyno was really at the crank and not whp ? how could there be such difference? other dynos are also showing <550whp ?

It is a confusing topic. Many articles have been written about it. I’ll give you “my” short version that is based on owning two different brands of “retarder” style dyno’s and having used inertia style, etc for tuning :

1. Retarder style dyno’s generally report lower rwhp numbers vs inertia style dyno’s.

2. Atmospheric conditions will vary the rwhp numbers even on the SAME DYNO EVEN IF CORRECTED TO SAE STANDARDS.

3. Some dyno’s, same brand, measure higher or lower numbers than others.

4. Dyno software Cal’s can cause delta’s depending on who has the latest, etc.

5. Re: number 2. Some folks are adamant that SAE equalizes everything. It does not. It does a good job equalizing atmosphere to atmosphere, but it cannot equalize a turbo car in 40F air making max timing on pump 93 vs the same car in 90F air pulling 4 degrees of timing due to the temp. Seen that many times.

6. Some operators cheat to make customers happy. Very easy to do. Very. Some just use software equalizers to get “Dynojet” or better numbers for the same reason.

Dyno’s are a great tool used properly. Heat soak, hero runs, etc etc skew numbers. BMW rates the M5 at 600rwhp. Probably based on SAE of 1.0 correction standards. Probably a 70F cell temp on 93. Dyno it at 40F on an inertia Dyno and you’ll probably make a little bit more. Less at 90F. Less with a retarder Dyno like DynoDynamics at any temp. I don’t even look at the rwhp to engine hp conversion numbers. Both dyno’s I owned would do it. Never used it. Too much “voodoo “ “for me”.

well out of the several stock f90 M5 dyno's this is the only one with a high number 600+whp ......all others were below 560whp.......we will have to wait and see others coming up to compare

Here is another inertia dyno graph to compare to the IND inertia dyno graph. Two different dyno’s, two different states. The lowest number is pure stock.

Forgive my ignorance, are those numbers at the wheel? If so they look very close to the IND numbers.

Yes. Both are from inertia DynoJet dyno’s at the rear wheels. East coast and West coast dyno’s.

thanks for that post.....nice to know on a dynojet this car is real strong! I am looking forward to dyno my 2019 competition incoming next week!
