I have owned 3 M5's and I would not have purchased any of them had the dealer put on that ugly front plate. NOT kidding.

That will even sell harder with 20K mark up. Those Crazy Rich Asian's Mom will pick it up just because it is the most expensive in the 5 series line up.

I know, I lived in Germany and it's the same thing there. They also needed for reinforcements camera so they can make pictures of you license plate when speeding. Lol

But they have very nice looking skinny license plate so it doesn't look ugly. Lol

I live in NY where we have to have a front plate. I have fabricated my own brackets to mount and dismount my front plates. On this car is was very simple.

I took a piece of sheetmetal (don't know gauge, something rigid enough to support the application) bent it into a L bracket. 3M taped the it the plate. Put a plate frame around it. Then drilled to holes on the opposite side of the bracket. I put foam pieces in specific spots to protect paint from vibration. Then 2 self tap screws on the underside of the top of the radiator air dam. No one can see the holes unless it's on a lift.

Voila', no bulky plastic bracket, no holes in fascia of the bumper.

Here in California 2 plates is law as well. However my dealer had me sign a paper saying that I would attach the front plate releasing them from liability. So far, knock on wood, cops have not hassled me.
I do see quite a few high end cars with out front plates. I have also talked to a few cops, some don't care . They understand why car enthusiasts want no front plate. However one cop said watch out because some have a bug up their butt about it.

Hard to believe the dealer did this on their own, I wonder if it was a sold car and the owner instructed them to put the plate frame on. There are too many other non-drill solutions for a 2-plate requirement.

Every car I bought in California they asked if I wanted the bumper drilled - the answer was always "no". I had to sign a piece of paper saying I'd instructed them to not drill, which was fine. The default position from dealers I went to seemed to be "we're not drilling unless you tell us to".

And for the love of God, at least put a decent frame on that thing.

No it wasn't a sold car. This was my order and it became a cluster fuck... Car actually came in a few days ago... My original advisor disappeared and then a month later he resurfaced in Las Vegas... Nobody knew anything about that F90 after reaching out to the dealership numerous times... I got irritated and pulled the trigger on another F90 sitting on a lot (2018) and then they hit me up over the weekend that my car has arrived - after 60+ days of no information or updates... That and let's be honest, 2018 residuals / MF > 2019 residuals / MF...

The holes in the front bumper tho... Damn, that's on par with attempted murder...

If anyone is interested, here is the build sheet...

In the Bay Area it's pretty common to see cars with no front plates; or no plates at all. It doesn't seem like the CHP/local PD care in (at least) the South Bay.

That said: I was in Tahoe on Monday, and was pulled over by CHP for my Euro-delivery rear plate. Fortunately my temporary registration was still valid; so no ticket. I was strongly encouraged to go to the DMV and get temporary plates.

Yeah in the US it's loosely enforced, but in many parts of the world, it's pretty strict.
