F90 M5 "Late" run in service ok?
Hi guys.
I'm planning on buying a certified 2020 F90 M5 this week and wanted to ask you for an opinion. I saw the service record, and it shows that the run-in service was done at 6200miles, instead of the proper 1200miles. Do you think this late run-in service could possibly damage internals? I heard that initial engine oil had some abrasive property, which I'm not sure if it's true or not. Bit worried about long term effects of this. Thanks. Best, Han |

Hi,
5000 miles over is quite a significative difference! BMW uses a special oil while the engine is in the break-in period, I would be afraid that small metal particles stayed in the engine for 6200 miles. I wouldn't consider buying this car. The other services were done at the right mileage ? |

BMW must not think it matters if it certified the car with the late initial service. But BMW CPO does not do much anymore — used to add 2 years to the warranty and now adds only 1 year. Failure to service creates issues that show up much further down the road.

AVOID simple as that, RIS should be done within 1200/1400 miles no more.
Look elseware for a car.

Yeahhhh, agree with everybody else here. Pass. There’s at least one story here on the board of BMW telling one guy they wouldn’t certify his F90 for going like a couple thousand over 1200 on break-in, so if that was true, then I have a hard time believing that they would certify one at 5000+!

As mentioned, if it was completed but not added to iDrive, fair enough, that can be solved.
Most of us only show that mileage on our first service after a year! What is the age of the car and current mileage? |

The car is in mint condition. 2020 MY model with 12500miles on it now. Oil change (runin) was done at 6250miles. The record is from the service center. So since the oil change, about 6000 miles driven mildly, without any oil level change. I'm about to pull the trigger on this, as the car is very new oil consumption is very low if any. |

I guess I wanted more information and use cases where late run-in service resulted bad long term out come or other horror stories. I'm going to test drive it throughly before pulling the trigger. I'm finding out that factory oil does NOT contain anything special such as abrasive materials. |

https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1740257 In the end (you can see it toward end of page 6) he did get his issue covered under warranty but it was a mess. Note -- they denied his warranty [initially and for some time after] because his break-in service was 1000 miles late.. vs say nearly 5000. |

One of my oil changes was late, and the service department warned me that if I have an engine failure, they will likely not cover anything. Thankfully i have proof that I change oil from Indy shop every 5k KM, and I was just avoiding dealer unless a recall. And was asking the Indy shop not to reset anything. But yeah I'd defiantly pass on a vehicle like that. Unless you are planning to tune anyways and warranty will be void regardless. |

The car I bought missed the service, got it done at 3,200. The dealer informed me and it was reflected in the price. I knew I was going to only have it for 3-4 years and I knew I was going to mod it.

If the first service has been done, and just not loaded onto the I Drive, thats no problem, but if it hasnt been completed, you must walk away, and find another. If your engine or Gearbox goes pop, you will be as sick as a dog, honestly.
