Just catching up on this thread. Glad to see it's all being paid for - must be a huge bill.
Where did you buy the oil cooler guard from? |

That’s some large dollars. Glad the insurance got it all sorted out for you; that’s exactly how it should work. I can already smell my insurance reviewing my record…. M5C… hum!! How much on repairs??!!! 😳Let’s crank the heat a bit more 😤

So now that the whole ordeal is over, I feel like I should comment on the performance of where I had the repairs done. Advantage BMW Midtown has been my go to place for service for the past 11 years and I have always had really good service. In this instance, I didn't have good service, I had great service.
My SA kept me up to date during the whole process which was a bit long and complicated mainly due to how my insurance company handled the claim. I will not get into those details here. When my SA found out that my father passed away during all of this, he had a huge bouquet of flowers delivered to my house from Advantage. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. When I picked up the car, it looked like it was brand new inside and out. The repairs to the bumper looked like nothing had happened to the car. The XPel PPF was applied well and this time the grills were covered in PPF, something that was not done on the initial installation. Since I have a new engine, I have to go through the whole new car break-in period and get the oil changed at 1200 miles. This is not covered on my normal maintenance schedule, but my SA said not to worry, they will cover it when it's time. I've used one of the other BMW dealers for my wife's X3 because it was more convenient. Not anymore.

Everyone I reached out for advice though all told me how lucky I was that I didn’t blow the motor. Pricey mod, especially since it’s bad engineering that caused this. But def peace of mind. Good luck

Its not luck. Ive been seeing a theme where the people who turn the car off immediately are fine. The guys who drive for a little while need a new motor.

Earlier this week was my 9th trip to Houston but the first time renting a car. I always chalked it up to poorly maintained Ubers with a lot of miles and past the strut replacement date, but wow your roads suck. I don't think I would want to drive an M5 there. It makes me appreciate our smooth roads so much more. And explains why there is such a variety of options on Comp vs. Base, Sport, Sport+ etc.
And I'm sorry you guys have such annoying traffic. And off topic but I had a Mustang rental. I actually liked it better than I expected, but one thing I really like is the extra gauges: Fuel/Air Mix, Cylinder head temp, and a few other things you don't typically see. Too bad it was only a 4-banger and had garbage rental car tires (no-name brand made in Vietnam) |

Houston itself is especially bad. A lot of the problems are due to the soil in the area. With the alternating dry and wet on the clay rich soil, the soil expands and contracts which wreaks havoc on the roads. Throw in lots of traffic and not enough money spent by the city on maintenance leaves pretty shitty roads. If you get out of town, you will find the Texas highways pretty top notch.
