this is a proper review done by someone who actually driven the car

Horses for courses - I am doing 10kmpa , running cost are half of what i am paying for Maser and was looking for sleeper which can toast 911 from traffic lights
But that is an American review, if you stuck a large engine on a dog turd they would like it

I do 20kmpa, virtually none of which is on motorways, & I want something fun for the country B roads, so they're the main reasons the S8 wouldn't be for me.

If I could get an M550d for £500pm now that would be something!!

An AWD saloon has to be the best get away car there is I'd agree. I think the transporter reboot uses an S8 too, though apparently with the front driveshafts disconnected so that they could get it to handle like a BMW!

nope , they used dynamic camera system and computer rendering to get it look like it handles like Beemer

Btw - I got 3 points on my license yesterday evening. Thank you Active Noise Cancelling , acoustic windows and auto-dimming mirrors , apparently they have been chasing me for like 3 miles.

Diesel, definitely! I could never go back to the low torque of a petrol engine now.

4wd, not sure yet!

Actually an M440d GC would be my ideal car!

Plenty of petrol cars have huge amounts of torque and hold on to it for most of the rev range unlike diesels that only give you a 750-1250rpm max torque window.

I get the economic reasons for diesel, but the modern turbo petrol engines like the 4.0V8 TT in the S8 are immense 480ft/lb from 1700rpm all the way to 5000rpm.

I'm talking in like for like fuel economy. A petrol that does similar mpg to a 35d or 40d will have very little torque!

No one here is saying that diesel is bad , well maybe except for NTG , especially BMW units are spectacular (3.0 and above) but quite frankly , diesels exist purely for economy reasons not for thrills and enjoyment. I had new M5 for few days , now driving S8 - you put your foot down and there is no hesitation really , it goes like crazy until 7/8k revs. This is what I am missing driving diesel.

You made a valid point , in order to get similar performance form petrol engine - it needs to be big and have turbos strapped to it and then there are fuel and maintenance costs associated with it. That being said I am truly surprised with S8 engine performance/economy ratio - to the point where I am considering commuting to London on daily basis (average 25 mpg)

I suppose 25mpg isn't too bad, especially with the price of petrol currently! My old E46 330ci used to average 25mpg & it had less than half the bhp & weighed about half a ton less than the S8!
