It's sad that stateside the best we can do is Dinan up a 3-series wagon. Maybe I spend too much time in the EU or have an unnatural love of wagons but our options in the US really, really suck. Lack of options maybe a better way to put it, there are a very few that we get here that are nice but so many more available that are unobtainium for us.

Wow that M5 Touring would seriously make me reconsider an M5, even without out a manual transmission (seems easier to take in a Touring). Thanks for the renders!

Don't forget:
The North American market almost didn't get the [E36] M3 after the E30 M3 because of similar reasons (i.e., no projected North American market for the M3).
BMW enthusiasts, led by the BMWCCA, initiated a letter-writing campaign that grabbed the attention of BMW of North America, who then reconsidered. Even though the result was a compromise (BMW NA wanted to keep MSRP down which resulted in a "neutered" motor), the E36 M3 and its sales figures proved that North America loved its M3s, and we've had every M3 generation with the same motor as Europe since then.
The M3's history is full of many great moments, in racing, in engineering, etc. But for North America, another great moment to add to the M3's glorious history is that once upon a time, the enthusiast community wanted a car (M3), and the manufacturer (BMW) listened to its fans.

I wonder, then, if the response is large enough here on Bimmerpost (one of the largest online BMW communities), that this will be enough to persuade BMW to reconsider and bring the 5er (incl. M5) Touring to the N. American market.

Perhaps future generations will be told the story of a time when we [almost] didn't get the 5er/M5 Touring, but due to enthusiast demand, BMW reconsidered.

We can dream right?
Good idea, BMWCCA and Bimmerpost could try to pull off an E36 M3 situation again? Just make sure there is a clause in there for RHD as the M550 won't be made in RHD

Clueless. There will be two M550's. M550i and M550e or three if you count the European M550d.
And none of those for the UK. And no M5 tourer...

Won't happen. And not in the US.
Sales are not justifiable for federalisation same goes for the 3er Touring which will eventually be replaced by the BMW X2 and all new X3 which will have far greater appeal in the North American market. Both the current X3 at seven years old and the latest X1 outsell the Touring by a considerable number with Touring numbers decreasing year by year. Even the maligned 3er Gran Turismo outsells the 3er Touring in the US.

And here is why.

Frank van Meel: This decision is and remains true. We have always said that we do not make an M from every car because we do not want to overwhelm ourselves or the market with too many models. There must therefore always also be a segment which is sufficiently large. And this is simply not the case with an M3 Touring. The car would be a pure Europe car because there is no market for such cars in America, Asia or the Arab world. And in Europe, too, we see that the market for high-performance combos in this segment is shrinking. I know there would be some customers, but there are just not enough. So we continue to focus on sedans, coupees and convertibles
.

Scott, respectfully, I think the reason why the wagons "don't sell well" is we get shitty options. If BMW NA brought in a bad-ass wagon, there is a market for it.
The dealers don't keep any on the lots, if a dealer had an M-Performance equipped 3-series or 5-series wagon in a hot color with a I6. People will buy it. I think the focus groups or target audience the market research BMW is looking at is way off. Again, no disrespect but it's the same group of people that thought the 5 series wagon wouldn't make it here in F11 from, and thought the GT was going to rule the world - its hideous!

Going back to hatch backs, the e36 ti was a joke and too expensive for what it was back then, now "Americans don't like hatchbacks" lexus, Volvo, Audi, Merc and VW have hatches here and they are pretty popular. What are we not getting?

If the Slogan i the US is the Ultimate Driving Machine, BRING IT! I don't want an X2 or X1.

People like me, mid thirties with a small family still want something that is fun to drive, useful and doesn't emasculate us.

Agree. I would have bought an e90 touring if there was a 335 or 335is or M3 version available. Instead I bought the sedan. Even an M4 grand coupe would be nice.

BMW has the ability to create the market by seeding the dealer's. They already do this. It's getting more difficult to get a non-xdrive car simply because that is what they put on the dealer lots. People buy them not necessarily because they want it but because that's what's on the lot. To be sure there is strong demand for them. But also to be sure the sales numbers for them are higher than the real demand.

I want an M5 wagon
With a CF roof
In the U.S.

I also would like a date with Charlize Theron.

I think that last one has a better shot of happening.

Curious what you've done to your wagon with the Dinan mods. Details?
