Carbon Ceramic Rotors

Hey guys and gals, I’m about a month into my M5 search and I came across a car about 2 hours away that caught my interest. It’s a 2019 with 40k miles, and it’s well optioned. The thing that caught my eye was the one pic they provided of the wheel/rotor. I know it’s just one picture, but these carbon ceramic rotors look odd (heavy wear?) to me. What do you think?

Hard to tell, maybe ask for a better picture? Here are mine for reference.

Picture is very low quality.. but hopefully you can ask the seller if its ever been tracked and he will give you an honest answer. Although true indications of wear on CC rotor is to weigh it and also check the wear indicator on the rotor itself.

That photo looks a heck of a lot like a steel rotor to me

Larger cross drilled holes and in the same pattern as the steel rotors (it appears)

Hard to say for sure.

I agree with your assessment. Someone could have painted calipers gold for the look.

They definitely look different than the CCB rotors

I thought the same possibly.

I don't know if you can tell the difference in the caliper, I haven't studied them enough to know if there is a physical difference by looking, but the possibilities could be painted the steel caliper, or its a car that came with CCB, and they for some reason (cost savings, or mistake?) installed steel rotors which to me would be a red flag.

This is an interesting theory as the carbon ceramic rotors are not on this car’s build sheet. I was able to see a copy of that today.

They swapped to steel rotors? Or painted calipers

If the build sheet didn't have CCBs from the factory, they definitely painted the stock calipers or for some reason put the CCB gold calipers on the car after the fact but not the carbon rotors. (which would make NO sense whatsoever). Unless the CCB rotors were swapped also... Maybe the rotors were toast, and the seller knew they planned to sell the car soon and didn't want the expense of new carbon rotors before selling it?

I'm not sure you could order the car with gold calipers as an option, unless it was CCB? I'm sure someone would know if that was possible? If not, they were swapped or painted.

But the photo you posted is definitely a steel brake rotor. The gold caliper? Not sure if its a swap from a CCB car, gold from factory or they painted the standard steel caliper gold.

It's the wrong LOGO on the Caliper for CCB, they are Painted Steel IMO.

The logo is the same for steel and CCB. Plus how can you even tell from that blurry pic lol.

I also wouldn't necessarily steer away if they're just painted. Many on here have done that. Unless they are marketing it as having ccb. Then call em out and demand a price reduction.

agree here, just because calipers are painted, doesn't make it a bad car.

if it was a failed attempt at a brake swap or had CCBs and now are gone, thats a red flag to me.

in person should be pretty easy to tell if it's a paint job or swapped. unless its a really really good paint job. I have to believe if you inspected close enough you'd be able to see if they were painted. Maybe not, but could at least compare color, or the logo, to an actual CCB caliper.

Only way I could see them swapping is if the owner tracked the car on the CCBs and ate them up and didn't want to shell out $18k for a new set and pads so they just through on steel rotors and pads which again is perfectly fine and what 99% of people will
Be doing to these cars with CCBs around the 100k mile mark when they need new brakes lol.

Thanks guys, I’m not sure if this is allowed here but here is a link to the car at the Lexus dealer.

https://www.lexusofbrookfield.com/used/BMW/2019-BMW-M5-992fee960a0e09a80adf76a1ef9908e0.htm?utm_source=au totrader.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=auto trader_listings

I like the color combo, but it just seems like there are a few red flags which give me pause.

The rotor definitely looks like it's made out of steel and not ceramic.

What are the red flags? They don't advertise it as having CCBs (at least not that I read). Sounds like the red flag is more you just hoping it did when you saw the calipers and then being disappointed it didn't. Are CCBs something you were looking for?
