Noticing more Comps w/ 706M wheels...

I have been seeing more and more Comps with 706M wheels fitted. I find this somewhat confusing as the 789s are lighter and forged vs the 706s cast/heavier. I would assume that BMW would only fit 789s on Comps unless ordered with 706s by a customer. I guess I just figured that the purpose of the Comp is to be lighter and slightly better performance. Thoughts?

This was me! Black, from the factory, no powder coating required. That's just perfect to me. To OP's point, Comp pack blacks out everything else, gives you Shadowline lights, etc. Why wouldn't you just do the wheels that way too if you want everything blacked out?

Second car (but first Comp) specced like this. Wouldn't have gone any other way.

EDIT - Sorry, I thought I read that from OP. I think it was someone who wrote that and now who deleted their post.

Everyone has their preferences, I personally like the 706s better than 789s. I do wish they were a bit lighter though.

I doubt most people realize they aren't forged lol, for example j have 810s on mine, because color and design (hate the weird Y looking wheels) and I was 100000% certain they'd be forged since on the ordering guide it says competition upgrade wheels... you'd think a no cost "upgrade" would be forged as well lol... heck even bmwNA told my dealer all wheels offered on comp are forged (albeit after I placed my order so don't really have a case)

I had my 789's powder coated black … got the look I wanted while retaining the lighter, forged wheels.

Love your blacked out 789s. If I had kept my Comp I would have done the same.

if i remember correctly there was some confusion originally from bmw presser calling the 706m like light weight or something along those lines causing some to believe they are forged etc. I don't dislike my 706m, and the weight thing is truly a moot point with something this heavy and they're not that much lighter, but i do like that there is less surface area for the dust to settle on! haha and easier to clean given the more open design. coating and mounting mine this weekend!

My plan is to make my 706 wheels the winter wheels and pick up a new set. Just need to decide on color - the all black doesn't work as well on frozen red as I'd like.

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack this thread but your previous m5c is still for sale if anyone is interested?

I think dealers also order cars with the 706 wheels for the aesthetics. That was certainly the case with my car. It was ordered by the dealer for inventory and there it was on the lot with the 706 wheels. Fortunately for me, that was the only thing about the car that I would have changed if I was spec'ing it from scratch.

Just gave me an excuse to purchase even lighter aftermarket wheels and use the 706s for snow tires.

I just like how the all black complements the Comp package.

It is truly an awesome car. Probably the best car I've ever owned.

I bought the orbit grey 19" 705 snow set up with my Donington M5, which orginally came with the black 20" 706 set up. The orbit grey looked ok. Before the 1st winter with the Brands Hatch, I had the 705s powder coated black. After the 1st winter, I liked the look so much that I went out and bought a set of 19" summers and swapped out the snows (I know, kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a dedicated set of snow wheels). I was also hoping the higher sidewall would help the ride. It did - a little, but at the end of the summer I put the OEM 789 tires and wheels back on for my 4,200 mile Rockies trip. Didn't really notice much of a ride difference, but the performance was considerably improved when I pushed it on the twisty 2 lane roads because of the lower profile tires on the 20" wheels. 2 lane performance is also one of the main differences of the M5 shining over the M850.

You would have had a nice road trip home, tho.

I've always liked a 5 spoke look

I specced black 706 as well for the overall look. It works well with shadowline lights and gloss black grill, diffuser, etc. and the red callipers compliment the green and black. Received my car this week and loving everything about my first M5 😁

Agreed, this was my point above. Everything else blacked out from the factory? Of course I'm going to have them do the wheels that way, too.

Same for Nardo Grey or other grey variants. I got in on the beginning when it wasn't popular and thought I had something rather uncommon. Then very soon after I started seeing it on Chargers (puke) and other vehicles like Honda Civics. I love the 706M's. The plan was to replace Nardo with Black Grey, but then everything went wonky. I've even been paying for a parking spot I don't even use just so I won't lose it.

Wow and thanks for the input guys! I guess I'm the only one in the camp for the 789s. I wasn't a fan of the 706s on my 2018 (hated cleaning them) and was constantly on the look out for a used set of 789s for sale. Finally I decided to remedy that problem by trading my 2018 for a 2021 Comp.

I'm on the camp 789 with you. I see where people are coming from with the wheel coming black from the factory and it complementing the rest of the competition package trim but for some reason I still prefer 789. I like the Y patterns it has.
