M5 Overrepair?
I have a '21 M5 and in January I hit some ice and wound up going off the road at around 5 MPH and scratched the right side of the bumper and snapped the right outer grill.
The first insurance adjuster said that the car would have to go to a luxury repair shop so I took it to a local one that a friend has used. My insurance, Allstate, and the repair shop have gone back and forth over repair vs replace the bumper and authorized the replacement of the bumper. I called to check on the status of the car and the repair shop is saying that the cost to repair the vehicle is 11k vs Allstate wanting to cover 6k. I asked for a copy of the repair shop's estimate and it seems like a number of items are thrown on. For example the replacement of the object sensor and parking sensor even though they were not damaged and fully functional, they say that since the bumper was damaged they cannot guarantee that the sensors are not impacted and would cost more if they keep them on and attempt to re-calibrate and they fail. They are also charging $1,400 to transport the vehicle 100 miles away to have the sensors re-calibrated. What do you guys think? Last edited by smbsocal; 04-29-2022 at 03:13 PM.. |

take it to a different shop, they shouldn't be replacing a wheel for bumper damage,
for reference, i got cut off in my last f90 damaged the entire front suspension, bumper because i hit a curb, total bill was around $5000 with parts/labor/paint |

Use a shop approved by your insurance company. The estimate for my repair kept going up and I know I would have been fighting with the insurance company had I used a shop I chose instead.

I think you're missing the sheet from the invoice that mentions they blow you for the rest of your life?

The problem is that the local shops won't touch a M5, it has to go to a luxury repair shop and Allstate doesn't have any approved luxury repair shops.

Ok. I have USAA and it offered me about 5 shops within 50 miles but the shop I chose did send the car to BMW for about half the work. I was happy not to argue with the insurance company since the original estimate tripled.

Any body shop can work on an M5. It's nothing special in that regard. I just had the bumper of my M5 CS repainted by a local shop, they are not a "luxury body shop". They had basic cars all over they were working on. They didn't need to recalibrate any sensors, they just removed them, and then reinstalled them when the bumper went back on. It was a ~$700 job. I had an M4 that had the right rear end completely destroyed a few years ago and that needed a whole bunch of new stuff, such as new bumper, new taillight, new carbon fiber trunk, quarter panel, etc (and sensors of course since it was all destroyed) and the whole bill for that was around $13K. Sounds like someone is trying to screw you. |

reread this mans post again. Everything is spot on, and correlates with my point above from before. Don't let the word "luxury" go over your head when picking a shop.. it's a word too commonly thrown around in the industry. Along with "specialty" |

It is annoying that the local shops don't want to deal with an M5 and push it to their 'luxury' shop. I do not doubt that they are trying to milk insurance. It is a shame since it makes it such a bad experience.
I hit ice going down a hill and slid off the road and the front bumper corner hit a high embankment going less than 5 MPH (probably like 2 MPH). Outside of the bumper scuffs and broken right outer grill I couldn't see any more damage but per the shop brackets were broken as well. |

i dont understand why they are pushing it to a special shop. The m5 is the same as a regular 5 series. Unless there is frame damage, everything is bolt on bolt off.....
No need for specialty aluminum shop. |

I picked up the M5 today and the front looks like new. I had to battle with Allstate and activated the appraisal clause but when I did that they worked with the repair shop and worked out a final cost.
In total the cost was 12k including the sensor re-calibration. If I went with a cheaper shop it would have cost less but this shop did a stellar job. |

I have USAA and took to one of their recommended shops while I was out of town for month on assignment and the place robbed my insurance blind and then I had to take it to bmw when I finally drove it home because the whole steering rack was shot. Total cost was $42k
