Dealer on charges $160 including fluid. One of the cheaper maintenance items.

Per my dealer brake fluid is suppose to changed every 2 years. My 18 M5 notified me it needs to be done. Price quoted is $209 discounter from $269 from my BMW dealer in SOCAL. My BMW work bike also requires the two year brake fluid change.

So I don’t need a scanner to bleed the brakes? I have the pressure bleeder already.

Ideally you would activate the ABS but I did not.

I don’t know since I have not done it. I assume ISTA will. There are also other scan tools that should do it but ask the manufacturer to be sure. Some of those have annual subscription costs. Some don’t.

I have ISTA. There is no routine that I could find for the US market cars. I watched some videos of this on the European cars. I followed the same ISTA routine and could not find anything to activate the ABS unit.

You don’t need to activate abs if you’re pressure bleeding.

You might be thinking you need a scanner because on the latest BMWs with DSCi like the G05 X5 you do. They are designed differently so you need ISTA to open some valves. Fortunately the M5 is the old school way so just a pressure bleeder is all you need.

I'd love to know about this. I have done brake flushes on many cars and have never run a program to 'open the valves.' There was not a mention of that in the BMW shop manual for the M5, so I guess I did it correctly. I have done it twice. LOL>

I did my kids civic twice also, yesterday I did it after placing some brake lines from the master cylinder to the AVS module and my scan tool would not talk to this car. 2013. I got an error message "Access denied, DCT's exist" blah blah blah. Frigen HATE these scanners. LOL.

I looked for the BMW setting for the ABS in Ista also. Did not see it. I'll have to look again.

The M5 doesn't need anything special. In the G05 ISTA download the very first thing is:
Name: Screenshot 2023-07-27 164055.png
Views: 153
Size: 40.1 KB

The dealer training guide for the X5 talks about DSCi in detail.

When I first paid for ISTA I got ALL the technical guides available. I've read all the M5/N63/S63 ones and the G05/B58 ones so far.

Oh, and I read the DSCi specific guide, which is where I found:

If the brake fluid is renewed by pressing the brake pedal and without using a bleeder unit, only a
very small amount of the old brake fluid is removed from the brake system. Furthermore, instead of
replacement, the brake fluids are subject to a high degree of mixing.

And:

The routine for brake fluid renewal serves to activate the linear actuator to evacuate the brake fluid
volume of the expansion tank and to change the old brake fluid in the pressure chamber.

The main reason for DSCi was to remove the need for vacuum...which you no longer get for free on an electric car. So to make a new brake system for for ICE and electric they are moving to DSCi. I would assume the G60/G90 will get it too.

I know my F31 requires it, especially if you have gotten air in the system...

The noise is EPIC.

I've never known about it on the F90. No idea why the DSC on the F3x is different. But I know different kinds of cars recommend it. Despite the units almost always coming from Bosch.

I think we need a DOT 4 Low Viscosity fluid. ISTA is a little confusing because it says if you have a DSC pre-charge pump you don't but then doesn't list any non-low viscosity fluids. I forgot to download the ABS/DSC overview but I'm pretty sure our DSC does not have the pre-charge pump.

This is what BMW recommends:
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...l/81220142156/

Which is just fine as a DOT low vis fluid. High quality DOT 4 of any kind will do, just try to use a high quality brand. This will be just fine.
