No way! insurance is cheaper on a 2 door sports car vs a 4 door super sedan?

Depends…

If you have two cars or more on a policy every additional car gets a discounted premium.

If the M5 was primary the vette would of been discounted as a 2nd vehicle or used for pleasure. Also if the avg expected annual mileage is listed lower for C8 than the M5, that will lower the rates more for C8.

The M5 is $110K+ the C8 $70K+

It would be cheaper to payout total loss on the C8.

That’s the poster’s scenario.

I’m not sure how they would be priced if it was a single car on the policy.

1 car $70K C8
1 car $110K M5

The OP said he was buying the Corvette. I think that is the right choice for a baller in his 20s who wants a lower end car just to build up his credit history before he buys a Lamborghini. I always worried about that when I was younger — if you get the fancy car now, what do you buy when you are older? But I was not like this guy; he will be driving Koniseggs or Rimacs, but hopefully they will have a comfy version for old people by the time he is my age. I see the guys in their 50s and 60s struggling to get in and out of their mid-life crises Corvettes and wonder whether they started too late. Maybe the OP is onto something with project Huracan….

Unfortunately that is the case. The M5 costs almost double what the C8 cost.

The repair costs on the M5 is A LOT more than the C8.

state farm recently upped my premium almost $200 monthly. their reason was cost of repair

The F90 is a mere steppingstone to a space shuttle for me. I hope no one sees me driving it, it's so embarrassing.

[QUOTE=718086f;30914658]Hello. I'm posting for anyone who owns a m5, what the ownership has been like for them? I've always loved bmw, and choosing between an m5 or c8 corvette.

Having a hard time deciding which to go with, I'm early 20s no kids want something nice to drive around. The main selling point on the c8 for me is the convertible, mid engine platform, would love to hear some feedback about owning an m5,

Also is the competition upgrade worth it over the base?

I had a C8, sold it and now have an XM and a 25’ M4Ccon order. I do miss the “wow” factor from folks seeing the car but I do not miss the quality issue with the interior. Granted I didn’t have any mechanical issues but, you spend most of the enjoyment inside the car. C8 is a beast but not very practical. My wife hated it lol, “it’s too low etc etc”

I posted this over on the M2 forum back in December of 23:

The M2 is one of the vehicles we are considering as the wife’s next vehicle. We have been with USAA for over 29 years. We are both in our late 50’s with clean driving records. Location does play a part and we reside in San Diego County (California). The M2 would cost us $952 every 6 months. Our 18 M5 we purchased new in 18 cost $608 every 6 months. I was pleasantly surprised last year when the premium was reduced from just over $800 every 6 months and it is my belief since the M5 was now 5 years old the premium was reduced by almost $200 every 6 months. Here are some other vehicles I inputted into the USAA insurance quote program. All quotes are for 6-month premiums with the same limits of coverage that I carry on all my vehicles.

Most expensive to insure to least expensive:

24 Porsche Panamera Turbo S: $2,167 ** MSRP over 200k***
24 Alpina B8: $2,007
24 X6M Comp: $1,875
23 M8 GC: $ $1,859
23 M5 Comp: $1,778
24 Porsche 911 GT3: $1,347
24 Porsche 911 S Coupe: $1,215 MSRP 155k
24 Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo S: $1,187
23 M3 Comp: $1,134
24 X5M Comp: $1,128
23 Corvette Z06 3LZ: $1,119 MSRP 155k
23 Audi RS3: $969
24 M2: $952
23 Dodge Challenger Hellcat Red Eye: $881
24 X3 M: $850
23 Cadillac CT-5 V Black Wing: $848
24 Porsche Cayman GT4 RS: $824
23 Cayman GTS: $793
23 Cadillac CT-4 Black Wing: $777
23 Boxster GTS: $771
23 Cayman S: $770
24 M340i: $759
24 X3 M40i: $753
23 Corvette Z51 2LT: $729 MSRP 96k
24 Porsche Cayenne S: $716
24 Toyota Supra: $699
24 VW Golf R: $689
23 Porsche Macan GTS: $657
18 M5: $608 My vehicle
24 Honda Civic Type R: $583
24 Acura Integra Type S: $567

Interesting take away for me is how much a 23 M5 cost to insure ($1,778) compared to my 18 M5 ($608), $1,170 difference with the same coverage. I know not everyone can join USAA but I have my homes and vehicles insured with them and the insurance premiums and customer service has been top rate. So, at least for us the with USAA the Corvette is cheaper to insure. The Porsche Macan GTS with an MSRP of 115k is $657 every 6 months. My take away is, BMW M products must have seen an increase in claims pay outs due to the higher insurance costs.

Talking

At your age, get the 'Vette, for a number of reasons -- some of which I am not allowed to mention on this site. Good Luck.

Thank you this is some good info to know... but I suppose the best way of knowing what potential car purchase is gonna cost on the insurance end is to get a quote for it before buying it and such.

I have my home, three cars, and umbrella policies with USAA. From where I started in 2022 with the insurance on my M5 CS to where it is now — it’s literally doubled. I’ve not had a ticket, accident, or anything that would cause the rate the change. They’re (and I guess everyone else) also just jacking up prices insanely.

I inputted a 22 M5 CS to be added to my policy and the 6-month premium would be $1,395.32. In addition, if I added the M5 CS and keeping my current 18 M5 my premium would increase to $701 every 6-months. Since I was only getting a quote and did not change my policy my 18 M5 premium remained at $608.

Out of curiosity, I inputted the following years of BMW M5’s for insurance costs. Again, all prices listed are for 6-month coverage with USAA:
22 M5 Comp: $1,317.76
21 M5 Comp: $1,292.76
20 M5 Comp: $1,223.65
19 M5 Comp: $1,154.13
19 M5 Base: $1,154.13
18 M5: $648.07

My neighbor just purchased a 24 M3 Comp X-Drive and he is paying $1,700 every 6-months through farmers.

I will have owned my M5 for 6 years next August. Everyday I drive it has been exhilarating. I believe it's one of the very best cars on the road today. However, I've been eyeing the new M40i with a manual, and I must say it looks really good. My M5 is fast as hell and I love that, but the engagement of a manual transmission is something I've missed in driving my last two BMW's. I might be very tempted to make the switch if I can find somebody with an allocation on the Z4.
