Lightning lap isn't rigged for fixed they merely have several amateur drivers at differing skill levels setting lap times, its fun but not the most accurate metric. Motortrend's times are much better for comparisons.

What's interesting is that the 2016 CTS-V beat the 2018 F90 M5 at Laguna Seca, but the F90 M5 beat the CTS-V at the VIR Lightning Lap.
Oh well. Different ambient temperatures, elevations, driver skills, moon phase, tires, density altitudes, tire air pressures, one driver had McDonalds flapjacks for breakfast, the other driver had oatmeal, different variations in earth's magnetic fields, one driver got laid by his girlfriend that morning, the other driver was only dating Rosy Palm, one car had carbon ceramic brakes, the other only had steel brakes, no 2019 F90 M5 Competition was used, no Velocity Red color available on the 2016 CTS-V (adds 20hp), etc, etc, etc, yada, yada, yada... Too many variables to account for the discrepancies in lap times.

That sounds like the Lightning Lap is closer to real world results for the average buyer/racer. Unless you are Pobst......

Can we just acknowledge the accomplishment? I wasnt the biggest fan of the car before I drove it and then subsequently bought it. But after a month of ownership and some really engaging drives, this car is better overall than my 2018 E63S. And now with the exhaust mod in place its even more brilliant.
Who gives a fuck if a Mustang beat it? Its clearly not a track set up for only just horsepower heavy cars.

I think they meant fastest sedan on that track. Not in a trait line or other tracks.

https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1525153 This was my initial writeup after I got the F90 for a full 2 days of driving.... I personally like the F90 better but its subjective based on how one drives, roads, interior needs, chassis feedback, etc. Since the writeup, I have actually grown to the appreciate the speed at which the car reaches in the matter it does compared to the E63S driven on the same roads. The steering is also a big factor. More than ever I appreciate the F90 steering compared to the artificial feel of the E63S especially in turns over 100 mph. Also Im an exhaust needy bitch so when I accelerate and down shift I need feedback and the exhaust mod completed what I wanted. That was the key detractor between the two cars: sound. I know some can call it placebo cause its new to me but the E63S wasnt all that old either (only 9 months) and I clearly remember how it felt on day 1. Truly two great machines though.

So, for the people who want 4 to sit comfortably and be able to put golf clubs or whatever else in the trunk, the M5 is a beast, and far from numb when you compare it to vehicles in its category. The M3 I'm sure is fun, but it's like a toy car if you want to seat 4 adults in it. I'm pretty short and I find the backseat uncomfortable. |

It's really so tough to judge the cars that are so close / within a second or so, of each other. Maybe the driver made a mistake in the M5 or 2nd place car, that cost only a second in time. I'd love to see one day a robot driving these cars, that will show the true numbers!

Some serious refinements to Comp chassis and suspension/steering components The ball joint style control arm ends over the base rubber bushing style will give you a much more responsive/precise feel alone. Extra - camber is a beauty too!

I keep reading that the car is "numb" and "boring" - and then there are those who are comparing the F90 M5 to a Porsche 911? Then there are the E39 folks and "my 2007 BMW" guys who seem to again not realize this is 2018. There is NO F90 competitor that is like the olden days. Those days are gonzo. Everything is big and heavy in this class. So saying that it wasn't nimble - compared to what (please don't say a Porsche 911). The numb - non-analog steering is everywhere. So while there are legit gripes with the car - it is really for ANY car in its class. Now for the boring comments. I just don't get this. Getting back to expectations - what were they? Being more excited in an M3? Why? Because they are naturally more nimble because they are the smaller, lighter and therefore more chuckable car? Lol. My point? As per one of the other posts I quoted: The F90 M5 is exactly what it should be - and is the best in its class right now performance wise. It's great to comment and give opinion, but 911 or E39 M5 to F90 M5 comparisons aren't it. |
